The car is a 1989 Pontiac Firebird Trans Am GTA. The color is a factory color called Gunmetal Gray Metallic, and it has a gray leather interior. It has a 305 cid. TPI with a 5-speed manual transmission. Has the WS6 (Suspension Package), MM5 (Manual Transmission) and Y84 (GTA) RPO codes. The car is 1 of 644 produced in 1989 in the color Gunmetal Gray, it is also 1 of 366 produced in 1989 with a 5-speed, making only one of a few 1989 cars that are Gray and have 5-speeds. I have only seen two other Gray cars in person, and both were automatics. It has 47,608 miles, no rust, and is clean inside and out, as well as underneath. I have owned the car for about 2 ½ years and it has only seen rain two or three times, stored in the winters, driven late spring/summer/early fall only. The car is very dependable, starts up every time, no issues with overheating. It has been driven to Trans Am Nationals 3 times (roughly 500 miles round trip) and has not had issues. The car has been treated well and has not been beat on or abused.
The paint does have a few issues, the clear coat is failing in 2 places (near the hood on each side), and there are some chips and scratches on the front bumper. The rear of the car; roof, quarter panels, and the rear have been repainted by a previous owner. The hood, doors, front bumper, and fenders are original paint. It is hard to tell the difference though, and overall the paint is in good condition. I have received many compliments on the color. It is also a color that you will not see very often (as opposed to the numerous red, black, and white cars).
The engine is a 305 TPI and has been very dependable and performed well. Sometimes it does smoke upon start, and it sometimes idles a little higher than it should. Overall there hasn’t really been any problems with the engine, when I first bought the car it wasn’t running right, but once the fuel injectors were replaced it has ran fine (aside from the occasional high idle). I haven’t had any problems with overheating or any other issues with the engine. I also haven’t had any other mechanical issues with the car. The engine bay is clean, as well as underneath the car.
The interior is gray leather. The outside edges of the seats (driver and passenger) are ripped, with the driver seat being a little worse than the passenger seat. Both rear seats are in great condition. Other than the rips on the sides the seats are in good condition and are comfortable. The headliner does sag in several places (a common issue with these cars). The rest of the interior is clean and in good condition. The dash is NOT cracked (it is very common for these cars to have a cracked dash pad). The carpet is clean, as well as the doors. The trunk compartment is also very clean.
While I have owned the car several parts have been replaced including; fuel injectors (as mentioned earlier) fuel pump (thought this was the problem originally, but it was the injectors). The bird emblems on the sail panel are new, the car came with incorrect center caps, those have since been replaced with the correct ones. The car also came with a stripe on it, which has been removed (it is very hard to tell that it was even there). The tires were purchased last summer (BFGoodrich G-Force Sports 245/50/16 all around) and are in good condition, they have not seen very many miles.
Re: 1989 Trans Am GTA 305 TPI + 5-speed Gunmetal Gray
Good luck with the sale I think this is a fair price. I cant always say that on here
Remember there were 644 of these 5 speeds made like he says so ...
Thats rarer than in 88 which mine is, and they had 809?
Re: 1989 Trans Am GTA 305 TPI + 5-speed Gunmetal Gray
VERY nice car! I will be buying one in 1-3 months. Technically I have the money but it shouldnt be spent yet. ...If this thing had T-tops I would be making something happen! If its still available (for your sake I hope its not) when Im ready I will have to consider it.
Re: 1989 Trans Am GTA 305 TPI + 5-speed Gunmetal Gray
Thanks guys! Yea, once you break it down a little it is sorta rare, especially since it it a hardtop (lots of T-Top cars). I've been to a bunch of car shows in Michigan, and have only seen two other gray ones. Both automatics. I also saw a gray automatic at nationals this past year. No 5-speeds though.
Just throwing it out there: the ONLY trade that I would be willing to make is my car + $$$$ for a 2000-2002 Trans Am WS6. Must be in similar condition (~40,000-50,000 miles +/- some), must be a 6-speed, must be either Navy Blue, Black, Silver, or Sunset Orange. Interior must be black, and it has to be a ws6 car. (I do realize that this is a thirdgen board, lol. Just for any lurkers, or before I get any trade offers.)
86FyrBrd, when you are ready you can send me an e-mail at: cmc_z28@comcast.net and I can let you know if it is still availible.
