Re: Who all owns an Iron Duke f-body?

Got these off ebay and when I paint the car I will install them.
I'm thinking of flat black and non-gloss clear coat and leave the hood and head lights Gloss black as they are already freshly painted.

Just like you would think.....SLOW!

My firebird is got a lot of miles on it. I'm not exactly sure the gas mileage any more. I don't even know what they were rated from the factory.

My duke runs great only 46,000 miles 31 to 33 miles to the gallon.
Accelation is fine, not that slow, but in no way like my V8 bird.

Re: Who all owns an Iron Duke f-body?

Hey there fellow Iron dukes!
I am looking into getting my ol Duke back on the road!
Looking for a good used engine and heck if anyone has a 5speed setup for a 3rd gen with an iron duke that would be great too! As of now it has a 4speed. Its an 82 camaro and from what I remember I was always getting mid 20s in gas mileage which is much better than what I am getting now in my truck.
First thing is I need to see what shape she is in after sitting for about 7 years.

Re: Who all owns an Iron Duke f-body?

Hey all!
May have found a good 91 S10 Iron Duke to use in my ol 82 Camaro! From what I have read the 91 iron dukes were the tougher ones! I have thought about the possibility of trying a centrifigal supercharger to give the duke a little oomph!
Wish me luck in acquiring this little engine!

Re: Who all owns an Iron Duke f-body?

I have a original 1978 chevy monza with one of the first Iron Dukes (Non crossflow head) and I cannot kill that engine for the life of me. A couple years ago my father said "Blow that engine and I will put a V8 in its place" sooo I decided to drain the oil to about 2-3 quarts and drain the coolant and just let it idle till it died. Well in the end it shut off before any serious damage and it still runs and refuses to die with any honor. The exhaust has been replaced with 2.5 no cat and a glasspack, port matched and gasket matched, advanced timing 12 degrees, weber carb 32/36 dgv (port matched), thin copper head gasket, full emission delete. I would have to guess about 150 at the wheels but with tuning I could get 52mpg city but I couldn't get on the hwy because of the 2.73 10 bolt and th200 3spd auto and I didn't like sitting at 2700 at 70 and the poor little car only weighed a little over 2000lbs and a suv passing me would push me almost off the road. If you want a real V8 eater out of the duke then just take out a morgage on your house and install a turbo SD Iron Duke and don't forget the 16v head and aim for 800-1400 hp.

Its true, the iron duke has to be the most dependable lil motor GM ever produced. I had a 85 S10 with a 2.5 and a 4 spd. it had 328K on it when i got rid of it and ran really well still, never failed to start.

Re: Who all owns an Iron Duke f-body?

Deal fell through on the engine from a s10.
So still looking!
I guess the FWD engines are too different from the RWD so I can't use them. Though they are easier to find!
Anyone know a good source for a 2.5 Iron duke? Couple on Ebay Stores but they are asking a bit much in my opinion.
Hope to get it running this summer!

Re: Who all owns an Iron Duke f-body?

Fiero's Iron duke will work and so will the FWD duke. The Fiero has to take RWD engines and as far as the duke goes 90% of them fit in the Fiero so you have quite a few choices.

Now I was told by a place that sells used engines that the FWD versions will not work in my Camaro. He didn't say anything about a Fiero version being able to work but he didn't have any listed either.
Guess I will do a little bit of research to clarify this.

Re: Who all owns an Iron Duke f-body?

Currently the house next door to me has an 82-84 iron duke firebird hibernating in the garage. It's a maroon color with a very light interior. I want to say a cream, or off white. I don't know what year it would be. No t-tops, and it's an auto. It's parked there because it doesn't run. Aside from the dust, the car looks in great shape. No cracks in the dash, etc. (rare for a so cal car) It looks like it's been there for some time. It's in Hawthorne, CA

Wow an iron duke thread, cool. 8 years ago i'd been all over this thread lol. My first car was an '83 Bird with 2.5 in it. NO options what so ever...well it did have power steering. One gauge was for fuel and the other was speedo. I Loved that car and was so proud of it. That thing had the STIFFEST clutch in the world. Supposedly the guy that owned it before my best friend ( whom i bought it from) sh!t rigged it with like garbage metal scraps, so unless you really knew the car you could not drive it. Onlymy best and I were the ones who could. Great thread guys

The Iron Duke engine was used as the basic reliable engine in a number of different vehicles, much like the old reliable steam locomotive made in England also called the Iron Duke. It was a relaible and steady workhorse used to haul many a different load (including passenger cars) from 1847 - 1865.

Re: Who all owns an Iron Duke f-body?

Hi guys!
I am from Munich, Bavaria in Germany! I have an Iron Duke Pontiac Firebird 1983 It's not that nice anymore, but it still drives around with me in the city. But it's all like getting crispy, you know. It also has 255/60 R15 and 235/60 R14 wheels...
I wanted to ask you, if anyone has something to give away, to sell me cause I need like almost everything new for this one and it's really hard to get the stuff over here. They say, there are only 4 Iron Duke Firebirds in whole Europe! And nobody knows how to repair this small one. The state - that means the motor vehicles registration office - is following me, cause this car is too old for over here, i need to restore it. So this is why I am calling you to help to get this sweet nice awesome car survive in this Olde Europe!
That is: I need all original style things back into my car. Like seats, motor, radio, brakes, wheels, steering wheel, exhaust system, well... Everything.
Hope to find your help!

Best regards,
Minona
