Re: If you have a Players Challenge Car, please post here. (RPO- A4U, 1LE or R7U)
Hey Mark congrats! Is the registry on the players site up and running then? Do you still have the info on the 87 ta that you sold me, or do you need it again? I think it would be a great idea to get these cars together again! Maybe mosport in a year or two?
Re: If you have a Players Challenge Car, please post here. (RPO- A4U, 1LE or R7U)
Kool to know that on your TA, she may one day sit in Vegas??
On your colors my 88 built in February (14xxxx) vin, I still don't have the large brakes but my colors are exterior 81, & interior 721 which fits your chart (Players) and is not often seen but for the true 1LE in later years it's used consistantly.
Re: If you have a Players Challenge Car, please post here. (RPO- A4U, 1LE or R7U)
It was:
- the 17# Trans Am out of 22 built
- the 10th red one out of the 15 red one's that year
- It is one of 10 red Trans Am's with a Grey interior.
- it is one of only 9 Trans Ams ordered with the base "X05" option package (no frills! No tilt, no power anything, zip, silch, notta).
So it is 1 of 10 Red Trans Ams with a Grey interior produced in 1987 for the Player's Challenge Series.
I always called the car a "stripper" as it has no options. It obviously weighs less than the cars with power windows, locks, mirrors, etc. Which is most likely why they came up with the R7U package in 1989 allowing no choices.
Mark.
PS. I will have a formal letter available which provides these details (suitable for your appraiser or just FYI )
__________________ Players LTD./GM Motorsport (Players Challenge Series)
GM built only 109 Trans Ams from 1986-1992 specifically for the racing program.
1988 Trans AM - 1 of 22 - RPO A4U - "Canadian Players Car".
- Factory delivered with 1LE brakes
1987 Trans Am - 1 of 20 - RPO A4U - "Canadian Players car"
Re: If you have a Players Challenge Car, please post here. (RPO- A4U, 1LE or R7U)
Great work Mark.
I race a 85 IROC in the Ontario GT Sprints. It is prepared with 1LE brakes and tank, and Players cage. Many other upgrades done also. Car runs 1 36s at Mosport. The car was originally delivered with a 305 HO L69 motor and 4 speed tranny. It now has a 383 motor.
Three friends have Players cars they race. Another is for sale right now. This is a fully prepared race car, not a street car.

I can't say I've seen many (if any) 1987 race videos. Very cool. Neat to see the logos. I have a jacket from that era ... funny to see it. Not bad quality at all.
I have some races from 88, 89, 90, plus a couple of GM promo videos.
Re: If you have a Players Challenge Car, please post here. (RPO- A4U, 1LE or R7U)
I got an R7U car late last summer. Has 150k km, dealer installed ac (owner had dealer add it on after sale), original LB9 and 5 speed however the motor has had light work (cam, porting, head work). The N10 exhaust was replaced, now has headers and no cats. Stripes were added early in the cars life and redone when it was repainted 6-7 years ago.
Really an amazing car, I'm surprised at how well it handles.
Im debating whether the ac should be taken out and put back to factory or enjoy it as it is.
I'll be looking to put it on track at a lapping session this summer, I'm excited to see the cars true potential.

Hi Mark,
I have an A4U 88 IROC-Z here in Edmonton, I seen the players challenge camaro booth at the powerama last weekend at northlands. The cars in the shop right now so I don't have very much details and its been killing me wondering about all the tell tale signs of if it was raced or not. If your interested I'd love to bring it by.

Drop me a note via PM with your contact details and we can talk. I should be able to narrow down who drove your car and where it came from. Perhaps the driver is still around?
Mark.
PS. I helped setup the display at Powerama ... the cars and display took home 5 awards! Not bad for a couple of "street cars".
Re: If you have a Players Challenge Car, please post here. (RPO- A4U, 1LE or R7U)
My dad has the 92 Camaro right off the track at mosport.
He bought the car directly off Ron Fellows and Craig Priddle is the one who raced it.
It looks exactly like it did off the track, number 16 with all the original stickers on it, roll cage, big brakes, racing chip, rear end. Its got about 113,000 kilometers on it.
I couldn't upload a picture of this beautiful car but if you would like to see a picture send me and email at zakpudsey@hotmail.com.

Mark - you and I have exchanged a couple of emails and with some luck hopefully we can tag up later this month but I though I would post here since the '89 is on it's way now...
After running the One Lap of America last month it was apparent that the weakest link in our program was my driving - I definately need more work if we're going to defend our class win in 2011. So with that the search was on for a street legal track car that I could flog without regret but still have fun on the road and eventually restore and - ultimately - put through it's paces in the OLoA. I looked at a couple of first gens (including the '67 RS I have sitting in the garage) as well as a couple of very cool second gens but couldn't figure out what I was going to build on a real budget that wasn't going to end up getting out of control. A couple of weeks ago I came across a cool third gen that was a little out of the ordinary, had some history, and was ready to hit the track as it was.
It's obviously been modified some from it's orignal Players Challenge days but it's not too far gone to be restored back to "original" specs when the time comes.
In 1989 and 1990 it was raced by Ted Powell and was later owned and raced by Kathryn Teasdale in the Firehawk and Motorola Cup Series. More recently it's been racing in Vintage classes in Ontario with a couple of GT-B class championships and a G70 class win.
I know it's not neccessarily a purists car but it's exactly what I was looking for and should be a lot of fun on the road and on the track.
Re: If you have a Players Challenge Car, please post here. (RPO- A4U, 1LE or R7U)
I know this car. It has been for sale since last year and very nicely prepped. I thought I listed it here somewhere as for sale.
Nice buy James. Shame it is leaving our region but it sounds like you have good plans for it. These cars should be at the track. Let's here about your results.
By the way if it is not shipped yet I know of a very nice 24 ft enclosed trailer that would fit this car for about $5k.
Re: If you have a Players Challenge Car, please post here. (RPO- A4U, 1LE or R7U)
Very nice buy! It's always cool to see a race car still being raced! 1989's were a neat year, first for 1LE package and most sent to Canada for the racing program. Just some detailing, covering up some "bare" parts and it will look great! ;-)
Re: If you have a Players Challenge Car, please post here. (RPO- A4U, 1LE or R7U)
James. What do you have to do to make it street legal? Are there not emissions issues? Register on the CASC forum a d search the videos. I think Ted got hat car from the Rob Racki (stuntman) and he has some old incar race video posted.

Everything that I have seen and heard about the car has been positive. Ted had been trying to sell the car for a while and I was actually quite suprised that it was still for sale when I talked to him. The fact that he had been prepping the car for a vintage race this weekend was a great indicator of the condition of the car. I'll keep everyone posted on results... my '67 will probably do most of the heavy lifting for this year while I sort out the '89 but hopefully we'll have some fun with it. It would be a great car to run the Targa Newfoundland with but I'll be running the Silver State Classic again that weekend - maybe next year...

Talk with you soon.
Mark.
I don't see it taking much work to clean it up and I agree - race cars were built to be raced. Give me a shout when you are heading this way, the car should be here when you are in town.

Alberta doesn't have emissions - visual or sniff - so that won't be an issue. I have to hook up signal lights and a horn and probably put some door glass in and it should be good to go (in theory). With luck I'll know in a week or two. We've got an autocross here weekend after next and that might be the first fun with the car before heading out to Race City.
You're right - my understanding is that it was Rob's car from 2001 through '06. Funny thing is that I was looking at Rob's 'vette on the forum when I found Ted's car 7 pages back. I'll check out the site for video's - hopefully I can find some.

I've been worried about turn in.

A friend of mine has a 91 Players Camaro race car he is selling. Great shape, clean, runs 1:39 at Mosport and with a more experienced driver it can run 1:36s.

Correction, my dads Camaro only has 13,000 kms on it. Also my dads thinking about putting it back to all original or taking all the decals off, fixing the damage and getting new decals made. Any thoughts? Here is a video of us running the car, it is insured for summer driving http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Qg43zVjcHwU

There has to be something about speeding, and recording it yourself, then putting it on yourtube, I would think they have recourse to actually fine you... More or less, you are breaking the law and telling on yourself by putting it on the internet...

If the decals are the originals I don't think you'd be able to match them. If he wants it for historical value it's better the way it is.
Don't know how much research you've done but check with MarkZZ3 and look on vancouverfbody for a guy that has a few R7U's. He rerstored one so he may give you an opinion on redoing the one you have. I used to have a 91 R7U.

Thanks for the information, it will be much help. I personally think he should leave it as is but its not my car
