I just bought a 84 firebird with a 4cyl5speed. The body is real solid and the engine was rebuilt about 1000 miles ago and a new clutch was installed. title says it has 155,000. Needs a paint job but i plan on slapping one on in the spring. Is this thing rare? How much you think i could get out of it?
I got an 85 4 banger firebird once.... for free to get it out of his yard. Nice body, though. Thanks to its existence my 87 formula was allowed to survive an unfortunate racing incident.......
Anyway, as firebirds go, it actually LOWERS the value to be a factory 4 cyl. All the more reason to hot rod it if it has a nice body!

Eh, i would rather just try geting rid of it. I forgot to mention that i have a 84 t/a ho that is just siting there. So i thinkim just going to try to off the 2 in a package deal and maybe make some money. Thats the plan, but we'll see maybe ill like the gas mileage of 4 banger.
In case anyone here is interested. Here's a couple pics of my firebird iron duke.
I'd like to modify this one with a turbo sometime in the future. (just for grins).

My first car was an 85 Grand Am with the Iron Duke. The thing was nearly indestructable! I know I put it though things that I wouldn't wish on a Mustang!! It had over 200,000 miles on it when I sold the car and it still ran pretty good (as good as the 2.5 ever ran).
Do any of the other Iron Duke owners find it ironic that years after the 2.5 was discontinued, Pontiac started making a car called the Vibe?
I have had the fan shroud out while servicing the radiator at one time. I should have snapped a pic. It was pretty bare. I want to put in an electric fan setup to remove the big 'ol fan/shroud. It would really open up the engine bay. Mainly for a turbo that I would like to eventually put in.

THe cool thing about that engine is you could remove the fan shroud and stand on the ground while you work on it...
Do something crazy like dropping a 2004 Ecotec Turbo and the manual tranny from the upcoming Solstice for something different. Keep it nice and light and powerful.
I ran across a four banger Camaro at the junkyard last year. It didnt dawn on me what it was until after I'd left. I should've got it, it wasnt in bad shape.

I think with all the stuff cluttering the engine bay it gives the impression of something bigger than it actually is.
When I open the hood to show people the motor they don't automatically see that it is a 4 cylinder. I have to tell them and then they take a closer look.
Originally posted by FAST RS I would buy one just to have does it get good gas milage?
Yes, it gets very good gas mileage. I could drive 2 hour road trip from my home for a weekend (all driving around included and 2 hour drive back) and only use about half tank. If that.
Not a real scientific analysis but it gets good gas mileage. That's the main reason why I put the bird back into the regular driving routine (had it parked for about 2 years). I drive much farther to work at from my new house than before.
Originally posted by okfoz I have driven a 4 cyl Fiero, and it was a real Dog, it was no wonder they cancelled the Fiero! That and it over exciting fire issues...
John
fire issues was 84 only...
it gets a hell of a lot better mileage than my f-body will.
they were cancelled because of gm not wanting a car that sold under 100,000 other than the vette and the vette team was scared. there are fiero's now that run circles around f-bodies and vettes.
I wonder what it would be like to drive a 4 cyl 3rd gen though. 0-60 in 60 seconds?
