Hey guys my name is Justin and im new to the boards. Im up here in northeast ohio and Im about to buy my first 3rd gen camaro. Ive always worked on Jeep Wranglers and CJ's or my Buddy's 1993 LT-1 trans am. Being most of my knowlege of camaros and trans ams in on the newer models I have a bunch of questions Im Hoping you can answer. First Im lookin at a 1984 Z28/iroc white with gray interior that my buddy is selling . The body is very straight minor rust here and there but nothing too bad and the t-tops don't leak lol. It needs paint, new nose due to spider cracks and a new interior. hes looking to get $700 For the car obo. The Engine is a carb'd 350 olds and a th350 auto. Apparently it runs but someone stole the Edelbrock carb out of it as well as cut the kick down and throttle cable so I havent heard it run. From lookin at the hood sticker the car originally came with a 305. My question is were the 305's in 84 carb'd motors too or were they TPI? Also I plan on tearing the old engine out and throwing a 350 crate engine in it as the olds motor is looking a little rough. Id like to know how I could get all my factory gauges and stuff to work when I have a carb'd motor in an EFI car? What I would like to do to this gen 3 is give it a semi stock apperance as far as the interior goes but have a nice engine under the hood. Also I'd like to have some of the nice stuff like A/c and heat. Should I just swap a TPI 350 into it? After reading this what do you think I should offer him, Im thinkin $450 or am I getting in over my head? thanks for all the help Justin

84 was a carb, or at least had it available.

Cool I've only ever worked on fuel injected cars and Ive never touched a carb but it looks like im gettin ready to learn.

It is almost impossibly unlikely that it's an Olds motor.

Take a pic of the motor and post it.

the motor is an olds because the kid that owned it before my friend told him he swapped it out of an old cutlass. but hey you guys know more about them than me so I wouldnt doubt if im wrong lol

Yup, that really is an Olds motor.... although it didn't necessarily have to be, as alot of Olds cars got Chevy motors. You never can be sure about that without looking.

Looks to me like it has never actually driven, maybe not even run, since it started holding up that motor. There's all manner of issues that have to be dealt with in a swap of that sort; exhaust, the torque arm, and so forth, none of which are available as "stock" junkyard items. They're all either swap specialty vendor pieces, or fab em yourself. Looks to me like somebody just glommed that turd off in there and walked away without ever getting it to work. Maybe didn't realize until after the fact, how much had to be changed.

I sure wouldn't buy it, especially if it looks like that still. What you'll spend actually getting it to work, is more than you can go buy a working car for. That car is pretty much destroyed. It's just a parts car now. I'd bet it doesn't even have a title.

Also, it either isn't a Z28; or somebody has swapped on the non-Z28 nose, removed the other ground effects, stuck on the 85-up back glass with the 3rd brake light, and otherwise pretty much just hacked it into oblivion.

It might make an OK parts car if you buy some other car and need body or interior parts for that one, though.

yea your probably right. I did notice the back hatch was different than most other 84's thanks for the advice!

yea that hatch is off an 86 when they had to have that additional tail light on the back hatch

there were no irocs in 84, they came about in 85

all 84s had compucarb motors, no TPI or TBI...so all were carbureted

i have an 84z28, so any help give me a holler

its also been repainted...the middle line on the tail lights is originally black, and inside where the headlights were are black, not the body color, on 82-84's, from 85-92 they were body color, so thats one quick way to tell if it has been repainted.

Man that car is in bad shape. To me It does not look like a 84 Z28 aside from the emblem on the dash. It looks like the car might have been in a wreck and that's why the nose change and hatch change. The nose looks like a 86 coupe nose with a 86 rear hatch. And 1991 RS wheels in rear and 1982-85 front coupe wheels. The engine is a whole different kinda animal. Yes it does looks like a old Olds motor like in the 70's. You need to run the VIN #'s and body information plate to find out if it's a real 84 Z28. I hate to say if it is a Z28 you have alot of work ahead of you to get that Z back in shape so I hope your pockets are deep..real deep! Only thing that car is good for is parts and a drag car. Now if you have plans to run it as a drag car then yeah $450 is a good price. If you want a real Z28 wait till you find one with less headache....
