6000 RPM Tach?

Hey Guys,

I took a look at a 1986 Iroc 5.0 TPI that is for sale here. It's a steal, especially if you look at the prices of other camaro's here in europe (4500 euro's for a v6 etc).

The car has the CHMS, power everything, black on red, original rims in good shape, camaro floormats, overhead console, Posi, T-tops and original bags with the stickers still on them, also the hatch pulldown works perfect. Is that common????

My real question concerns the tach that has a redline @ 6000 rpm. Vin indicates F (305 tpi) engine. Isn't the tach supposed to have yellow @ 4500, red @ 5000???? TGO info for 86 camaro tells me it could have the 205 hp engine, still tach does not match. FYI: It does have the 145mph speedo.

Re: 6000 RPM Tach?

That seems strange. the oil pressure throws me off too. the v-cars were 60 psi at the top end of the gauge, and the 6 cy cars were 80. Sounds to me that the cluster has been swapped, with the exception of the speedo. If anybody else has any vital info let us know.

cheers!!!

Re: 6000 RPM Tach?

You are right it is a v6 tach: http://www.thirdgen.org/techboard/bo...maro-tach.html (WICKED RARE Camaro tach?)
I don't think i'll take her up to the redline

Does anyone know how rare the options and original stuff on the car is?

Re: 6000 RPM Tach?

you will be hard pressed to turn the car on and the tach to read correctly. the guts of the tach are for a 6 cylider and not an 8. I would think the oil pressure and the temp wouldn't be a problem.

cheers!!!

Re: 6000 RPM Tach?

There isn't anything that stands out as being rare, all the options you mention were fairly common or standard equipment. 86 was a very high production year. There are plenty of little quirks that make an 86 a bit of a pain, but nothing serious. Overall it doesn't look too bad, on a scale of 1-10 with a 1 a complete basket case, and 10 a mint condition showroom fresh car, it's about a 4 or 5. It looks like a decent driver, and certainly a decent place to start a build up or restoration.

Re: 6000 RPM Tach?

I've seen several Firebird tachs with a switch on the back for 6 or 8 cyl. Maybe the Camaro tachs are the same.
