Whats an 83 Trans Am that has been restored worth?

I am curious what an 83 Trans Am equipped with a T5,pw,t-tops, black interior with brown upholstry soon to be all black, and ram air is worth?

I see Trans Am f-bodies sell from 500$-8000$ I notice they are more sought after now aswell now they are older and they become more rare.

But looking online I notice even GTA's selling in the usa for as low as 1800$, makes me want to take a trip down there to buy a quad and a car

But I want to get an idea of how much my car is worth make me think about how much more money I put in it I dont wanna Be one of those guys who spent 20-80+ thousand on their car when it was better spent on a chevelle or whatever. Unfortunately I have spent alot of money on mine already getting the body and drivetrain done. But now I want to know if it is worth it to get all the bells and whistles on it, locker, line lock, leather, discs, lcd-nav, etc...

Are you looking to sell this car later and make a profit? What type of restoration are you doing? Is it going to be completely stock? From your post it sounds like you are/wanting to make mods to it. If you are looking to sell after it's done, you are probably going to take a loss.

I am gonna lose money guaranteed, and I will never sell that car just curious to see what it will be appraised at for insurance. It will be mostly stock jus modified motor with stereo and leather.

Re: Whats an 83 Trans Am that has been restored worth?

It is most likely impossible to nail it down as to what it's worth because there's not enough description. For instance, if you have modified the engine, does it look factory stock? Is it factory clean or does it have surface rust here and there? Does your new paint look factory and did you replace all of the appropriate decals? Stereo systems don't really add value to a car, and unless the engine is really something special (i.e. 500 HP fuel injected with dyno to prove it), the engine doesn't add much value.

Is it a Daytona 500 edition? Now that adds value.

So does geographic location. A Trans Am in Mobile, Alabama might not bring the same money as one in, say, Toronto.

That said, it could be a $1500 car or it could be a $3500 car. If it's low mileage and completely stock appearing (with fully functional emissions) and clean everywhere, it could be a $5000 car.

Re: Whats an 83 Trans Am that has been restored worth?

I just thought it was interesting you said "83 Trans Am that has been restored". Considering that GM has totally abandoned this era of Firebirds and does not make most of the restoration parts for them, we're left to scavenge junkyards and parts cars. I can't buy restoration parts no matter how much money I offer. Technically these early thirdgens are impossible to restore right now, unless GM or authorized contractors start to supply the parts for us.

If you have a 60's GTO, you can always choose between multiple versions of the same part. You want the 1-of-3? the 1-of-8? the 1-of-37? They're all available. Not so, for us early-thirdgen guys...

Anyway I would guess that if an 83 T/A was all original (very hard to find) and had like 100,000 miles and in average daily driver condition, it would go for $2000-3000 or so, from what I've seen.

You got that right, finding parts for my 83 T/A restoration project is a PITA. Some stuff is out there but not much. I’m spending a lot of time reconditioning parts I have. for example, the rear disc brake shields are suppose to be gold/cadmium. Since I can’t buy the part I have to have my old one striped and replated which I should get it back in a week or so. At least most the rubber is still available.

Re: Whats an 83 Trans Am that has been restored worth?

Yah, you're right about the restoration parts. Usually anything that is in any catalog for thirdgens, is stuff that is still available from GM. Some stuff is reproduced aftermarket, but stuff like arm rests, and anything else that you need two of but can only get one side...it's still from GM. When they're gone they're gone. I remember seeing console lids in the Classic Industries catalog, can't find them anymore. Same with the '82-'84 window filler panels. I need 2 bad, plus the "window triangles" but I remember seeing some aftermaket ones being made. Same with the "PONTIAC" emblem on the headlights. They used to have the silver and gold...now I only see the gold. Side mirror gaskets I can only find one for remote mirrors, not power..not sure of the difference but there are 2 part numbers. As for interior cloth...I don't like anything that's out there aftermarket. They can't get the colors correct, or even in the correct color combination...like door panels. My interior is dark charcoal, but the panels available are like black , dark charcoal, light gray...Mine are charcoal all around. Why can't they get the colors right?? This is why I haven't got any new seat covers, door panels, headliner/sail panel cloth, carpet and sun visors. I've seen some cars with them and they look like crap.

so yah, when I hear people say they "restored" their thirdgen, I kind of laugh a little just because I know what is, or I should say, what isn't available. Nothing against the original poster and his restoration.

Re: Whats an 83 Trans Am that has been restored worth?

It is possible to restore these cars, but like wildjeff said you really have to go further and make the extra effort, more than owners of more popular 60's era muscle cars have to do.

I have only seen a small handful of early thirdgens that have been correctly restored. (One or two) Each one required a MAJOR effort.

Just like everyone said, parts are virtually impossible to find and you will be forced to refinish and work with what you have.

You will be better off/cheaper to buy a well maintained car in good condition rather then restore a basket case. There are lots of good ones available at reasonable prices.

Re: Whats an 83 Trans Am that has been restored worth?

I don't think it would be worth anywhere as much as restoring a rarer Trans Am.
If you want to redo a car, pick a Limited version, and do that, even though parts would be harder to find.
As stated above, find a car in primo shape would be my opinion.
You can talk all you want about restoring GTOs and early Firebirds, but things like interiors (seatcovers and door panels) are no where close as the originals.
Same with alot of decals.
People in the know would spot a restored interior over a stock interior easy (again, second gens).
'82-'83s seem to be the same as the '80-'81 Trans Ams.
Slow, not as wanted by most people. Unless you are talking about cars that look like Knight Rider.
I like them all, and would not mind owning any year Trans Am.

My take,

George

$15,000-22,000 for a crossfire 305ci V8 with a 700R4 4-speed automatic
$25,000 for mint 5-speed with a L69 305ci V8 or LG4 305ci V8

trust me you are better off modifing the v8 to make more power if its a crossfire if its not keep it stock
