Well, I decided to research my 1992 Z28 over the weekend, so I logged on to CarFax and paid the $30 for a report. The report came back with only 7 records and was missing the last six months info that I knew the car had. So I went to AutoCheck by Experian, laid down $15 for their report and got back 18 good hits with the info I knew was missing AND 2 other owners going back 3 years that never showed on the Carfax report! My conclusion?....CarFax sucks, use the AutoCheck for half the price and twice the info! JMO
Actually I have found that you get a more complete picture if you buy both. It seems that Autocheck is better, but both have items that the other did not. When I did research on the verts, I found that some cars were not listed in Autocheck, and others were not listed in Carfax.
Overall I would agree tho, if I had to spend my money I would go with Autocheck.

I also agree with John, it's obvious the two services use different databases, so pulling two reports should give you a bigger picture. In my case, Carfax did not show a single thing over the AutoCheck, so AutoCheck was waaay better (and cheaper) in my case. I did request a refund from CarFax, still waiting on a response (advertise 100% Money-back guarantee, we will see.)
On another note, trying to document these things in a world of private personal information is really tough. I keep running into dead ends at the dealer, DMV, manufacturer, inspection stations, ect....
What am I missing? Anyone have luck somewhere else? I did find a GM Restoration guy that charges $50 for a dealer invoice, anyone use that? Any other good routes or ideas are greatly appriciated!

A Dealers invoice would only give you the same information that your SPID sheet would. If you do not have that information then try a dealership, as I believe they shoudl be able to print out the RPO's from their database.
Do a search here for dealer invoice and you'll find an email address or a number you can call to get the invoice directly from the GM source. They have it outsourced today, but was available for free a few years ago. TGO ruined it for all the new people because we all jumped at the opportunity to get our original invoice for free and we inundated a part time worker. I believe they are now charging the same $50 for it to pay or the time involved in researching the VIN, printing the sheet from microfiche and mailing it out.
