yes i agree though the way the body is shaped on my 91 i have to wash it every two days i get some mean spray on the body. no mudflaps for me though but what ever floats your boat
I did a quick Google search and it seems that GM uses RPO code Q8H for 'splash guards'.. But I've never seen that code on an F-Body. Trucks and SUVs are the only vehicles I found with that option.
FWIW, my solution to splashes is to never drive my GTA when it rains or the roads are wet.
Im pretty sure both my thirdgens came with mudflaps from the factory. Im away from it right now, but Ill check the RPO when I go home next. I think I came across the "splash gaurds" code while de-coding both cars....but my memory stinks.
The 86 had 4. They all said trans am on the bottom. The person I got the car from was basically the original owner. I say basically because his aunt bought it new, and he's been driving it since new. They didnt modify a thing. Nothing... Only a magnetic reed switch for the ignition. I still have the air deflectors under the rocker GFX.
The 87 only had rears. They were smaller, and had the screaming chicken on them in all black. I liked them...they were alittle more discreet. They helped alittle with stuff getting kicked up, however they were skinnier than the tires, so they didnt block everything.
My 87's. You cant really see the bird though, which is why I sort of like em:
The 86's. Big white TRANS AM letters, and on all 4 corners. They hang alittle lower and are more noticable.
That said, I ditched all the ones on the 86.

As promised...when I got home yesterday, I grabbed my RPO labels. Decoded them when I got back to my place. No mention of splash guards. Told ya my memory stinks. haha.
I also meant to grab the two different mud flaps and check them over for any part numbers...I doubt they have any. So I guess back then they were just dealer add ons. I thought for sure the ones with the embossed firebird were factory...or at least GM. Maybe they are GM...
Either way...just wanted to post up. Two different cars..one from Van Nuys, one from Norwood... neither mention mudflaps.
Back in the 80's, when they were much more common, you could buy mud flaps with popular vehicle names and logos on them at any auto parts store, Kmart, or JC Whitney. Trans Am, Z28, Cutlass, Monte Carlo -- they were all available. Dealers may have sold the same flaps as add ons, but they were never factory installed on our cars.

Mud Flaps are over the counter parts at the dealer. They were not a factory ordered part. There are GM part numbers for the different mud flaps, but that was for ordering a set thru parts, not to order with the new car. The service department would install them pre delivery if you wanted them to. I bought many cars during the 80s and also told the dealer that I wanted a set. The salesman would throw them in on the deal.
