my new 83 Recaro

i just picked this car up yesterday from a friend 4 hours away. its a 1983 Trans am Recaro 100% original 126,000KM(75,000miles). 305 LG4, 5spd, t-tops, rear disk brakes, posi, and the ugly wheels. Its been sitting for atleast 5 years now but does run and drive good. drivers rear wheel well had some rust and was partially fixed but otherwise mostly rust free. front seats are pretty bad shape and the weatherstriping.

i was originally just buying this for a winter beater but after looking up the recaro im wondering if i should be saving this one? what you guys think of it? i got a bad pic from my phone when i stopped off the road half way back.

Save it. Have fun with her though. Get it all restored and just drive the beauty! I would just save the old wheels though.

Re: my new 83 Recaro

The only down side with the car is I think you will find the performance with the LG4 to be lack-luster... You will definitely have some fun driving it, tho.

Being a Recaro I think makes it worthy to attempt to cleanup or restore. Admittedly, 3rd gens make horrible winter beaters as they do not go through snow too well... light snow maybe, but nothing above 5 or 6 inches... get a FWD car for that.

I am not sure if people realize this or not, but the Recaro was more or less the GTA before 1987...

Trans Am and winter beater...there's two things that don't go together!!

I didn't think anybody would buy a Trans Am as a winter car.

Nice find, keep us updated.

I'd say keep it as a summer cruiser. Not a DD.

So long as you're in the part of Alberta with no hills.... Winter of 07/08 I drove my firebird. Had new tires, plus the winter was pretty mild. I was still walking home a few nights a week. Never again.

Re: my new 83 Recaro

well its on the road today. sure fun to drive but i found quite a few problems with it, but i guess since it was sitting in a drive way for atleast 5 years and never driven there will be. the engine had a bit of a bog around 3,000 rpm and then cleared all up. then on my way home for 10km on highway the engine was basicly dead, there was a tiny sweet spot i got into that got me just up to 100kmh and had trouble staying there. soon as i hit town it cleared up and ran like a top. clutch started to feel like the cables really dry and sounds like a vacum leak. oh and the 1 center wheel cap flew off, passenger sun visor fell off and the rear view mirror

Re: my new 83 Recaro

Glad to hear it is on the road. Sounds like typical things for a car sitting so long.

I hope you went and picked up that center cap, those bowling ball caps are a real pain to find.
