It was a one year only color for the GTA - 1987. It's called Dark Russet Metallic. According to Frankie's figures, there was only 372 (Trans AMs and GTA).
Manual windows in the GTA was possible back in 1987. It would be considered a base GTA as in 1987 some of the interior equipment were optional.

I believe even after 87 you could get a GTA without power windows as a delete option am I right? Despite all the cars being practically loaded I did read somewhere you could get GTAs and be able to delete things like Power mirrors, power windows etc. It could have been the TA too, don't recall exactly what I read.
I do like the brown, but it seems they deleted most of the options. I don't see any door mouldings either. If someone didn't want options they should have bought a Formula.
Oh yeah, off topic of this thread, but there's also a yellow '87 Formula on ebay right now with only 411 miles on it. In case anyone is interested, LOL
Anybody else having problems looking at ONLY 3rd gens on ebay? I have to sort through all model years now for some reason.

Looking over the 1987 worksheet, it shows the GTA (y84) did not include power windows, among other things. RPO code option packages W63 or W61 included power windows, among other things.
So a base model GTA in 1987 did not include power windows unless ordered.
wow that's so strange seeing an off color GTA like that! As if i knew alot about GTAs, something new pops up! Never think you know everything! and this happens after i find out that later 2nd gen firebirds were avalible from the factory with orange paint! (dunno what the color name call)....but that's another story...

That guys color blind! It says "burgandy exterior??". I like that root beer color. Pretty rare i suppose. And for the manual windows Im a fan. Less power operated stuff just has a more classic feel to it.
Well, it is possible that it could be what GM called Flame Red Metallic, Frankie has a picture of a Flame Red GTA that looks like the Midnight Russet Metallic
Appears he updated the exterior color to option to "Other" and described it as Dark Brown Metallic.
Also noticed in the safety features section he has the following listed: Anti-lock brakes Driver airbag Passenger airbag
Obviously none of that is correct.
He needs to take better, and more complete, pictures. That's a low mileage "rare" GTA being a one year only color for the GTA.
I emailed the owner and asked about the color because I was curious. Here's the response...
Quote:
I'm sorry, I guess I entered the incorrect color. The weather has not been good here, but I will update the color and add more picture as soon as possible. The paint is "Dark Brown Metallic" and is a limited edition color on Trans AMs in that year. The paint appears to change color slightly in the sun.

Hmmm...since there were fewer than 372 GTAs made in Dark Russet Metallic, and being that most GTAs had power windows, I would imagine this car could very well be a one of one. I also like the LB9/5-speed combo. Neat car.
I agree that the pictures are poor. With better pics, and if that mileage listed is actual mileage, I can see this car bringing a premium price. But with crummy pics and a minimal description there are no bids yet.

No map pockets in the door. Were those standard in all GTA's? Another delete credit issue?
I like the brown colour. Strange as generally don't like brown vehicles. But it does have that root beer quality to it. I can't for the life of me figure out who would order a car with so few options on a car like the GTA.

If I recall correctly, there isn't quite a 100% solid conclusion on the map pockets, other than it appears to only be the early 1987 GTA models that lack the map pocket.
I think it has something to do with the crank windows and the crank hitting where the map pocket would be at on the door panel.
There are power window equipped GTA's that don't have the map pocket. It was speculated it may be an early 1987 GTA thing. I don't think there is a solid conclusion.
There was a thread on GTASourcepage were several 1987 GTA owners (GTAs that were loaded) didn't have map pockets and others did. gtayumiko, who purchased her GTA when new, does not have map pockets on her 1987 GTA but does have power windows.
Yes..my GTA is early 1987 and it has every available option for a domestic US car and it does not have map pockets..
BTW:
All GTA's (W61 & W63 Option Group Packages)came with Power Windows (A31) unless you also added the B6W item-delate code.
All W63 Option Group GTA's came with Power Door Locks (AU3) unless you added the B6V item-delete code.
All W61 Option Group GTA's did not contain Power Door Locks, remote deck lid release, interior roof console, visor vanity RH mirror and inside rear view auto tilt mirror.

I was looking at that myself, and when looking at the 1987 worksheet, I noticed the B6W option code shows it's only available on the Firebird, Formula and Trans AM as a power window delete.
I know the worksheets may not be 100% accurate, as we had a previous discussion about a few solid color options on Trans AM years.
Here's the 1987 worksheet (right-click and select view image if it's not scaled correctly)
You can see that under the GTA column, A31 does not have an asterisk like the Firebird, Formula and Trans AM does for option delete.
My GTA pretty much has every option except the digital dash. It's a 350 so of coarse no t-tops either. Mine does have the map pockets, and amazingly with 164k miles on it they are still in great condition.
I guess that bad eyes have set in and I didn't see the little asterisk. As you can see from the order form, for a GTA to have crank windows would mean the vehicle would have neither W61 or W63 Option Group. However, it appears that one could still order the GTA with options like AC, electronic IP, rear window defogger, power antenna, and a few different radios. The question is why would you not take at least one of the Option Groups? A decontented GTA was never a consideration for me. No disrespect to the owner, but this is a strange contented GTA.
Hmmm, now that I think about it. I've never once used the map pockets for anything. They're essentially trim pieces to me. Yet I have 2 maps sitting on the back seat carpet.
No cruise control, either. I've never seen a GTA optioned so lightly. Generally they were loaded up. Seems like a strange car to order.
This guy really needs help taking good pictures of the car. I'm sure that when properly presented, in the right lighting, it's a knockout. Heck, he can't even take a picture of the whole car without cutting an end off. And zero feedback...perfect example of how NOT to sell a car on eBay.

I have the window sticker for my car and just about the entire right side column is filled with options. I notice on this car there's nothing in that column at all.
The car is back on eBay. Same starting bid, same zero feedback, and the same blurry, dark pictures. Too bad. This guy really needs some advice on how to properly market this nice car.
That is an ODD car for sure. Power windows but nothing else?
I REALLY like it though. Way different color. Appears to be very clean. 5speed GTA.... If I had the money Ide buy it. Regardless of his mistakes in the description. Not everyone is a thirdgen expert...some folks are in the dark about things like that.
I certainly would want to go look at it first...But even with his crap pictures it looks like a decent car. I wouldnt worry about the "joy riding" comment either. He probably meant they put new tires on to make it safe to take out for fun drives. As in...not daily driving it. I joy ride in my car sometimes...we all do.
I think his price is whats putting people off. Its a good chunk of change. If he got some nicer pics, got a more comprehensive and accurate description, and started his bidding alittle lower I think it would get a lot more attention. I wonder if he advertised over on the source page...?

Nice low mileage car. I have a early 87 that is loaded but no map pockets. The partial serial number on mine is 8XHL217XXX so I know it's a early build as most '87 GTA's I have seen start with 22XXXX. I hope he gets his price,I noticed that 10k figure is lower than his reserve.
I thought I would point out that this brown GTA is also from the Norwood assembly plant. Norwood was shut down after the 1987 run, so the GTA / Norwood overlap only happened that one year. The vast vast majority of GTA's were made at Van Nuys. I don't know if this has to do with the rarity of the color or the manual windows, but I really like the looks of that car. One of *many fewer than* 372. $10,000 is actually not that far from reasonable, in my opinion.

I, too, was considering the Norwood versus Van Nuys plant in wondering if that may be why some 1987 GTAs had no map pockets despite the car may have been loaded (though this one isn't the case). Given it only happened in 1987, the last year of the Norwood plant, it does make for a curious thought.
