not sure what it's called

My friend use to have a camaro rs t-top, 91 i believe. However he also had some sort of rolling shade in the trunk area. it was contained in a cylinder and connect behide the back seats and would roll out and latch where the hatch latch is, concealing what every was in the back. was that an option? or something he took from another car.

Re: not sure what it's called

Common. I believe it's called a "Cargo Shade" or "Cargo Cover". Looking for one myself right now.

The cover has spring loaded tabs on either end. They fit into holes on either side of the side panels. The attached photo might help.

Yes, the cargo cover was a factory option. The earlier style covers were vinyl and the later ones were cloth. All factory covers were black but the later cloth covers tend to fade to a purple color.

Re: not sure what it's called

The option was RPO D42 roll-up rear window security shade. The interior plastic panels are pre-scriped on the back side for the hole location. The factory used a die stamping machine to punch the holes into the plastic. There were also metal brackets welded to the body of the car behind the interior plastic that the cargo shade end peices attach to.

I added the option to a friend's '87 Camaro IROC-Z that didn't originally have it. Its fairly easy to do with the help of a hole saw, some drill bits and a Dremel.

Re: not sure what it's called

I added one to my car for $5 9 years ago... Found one in a camaro in a junkyard, I pulled the cover and the inserts that go into the body. I got back to my car only to find that I needed some brackets... I went back to the junkyard with the car and I took some measurements of the lengths of the legs where it attached. and the width. Wrote them down on a piece of paper.

I put the plastic panels back in the car and used a sharpie marker to approximate the location of the the brackets.

I used some basic .032" thick sheet metal and bent it with the Vice. and put the brackets in with some self drilling screws... worked like a charm...

More than you probably wanted to know...

How does it attach to the hatch. Mine seem to be broken somewhere.

Re: not sure what it's called

That plastic trim panel on the underside of the hatch should have two slots cut into it for the cover to clip into. If not someone has replaced that piece. My car has this cover but not the hatch trim that goes with it so its fairly useless at the moment.

I do have two holes in the plastic panel. There may be something broken on the handle, I guess I will need a picture to see how it's set up.
