Plastic Dashpad Cover?

I was in a boneyard today, and noticed an 83 Z28 with a PERFECT dashpad. I touched it, and it didn't feel right. Then I saw there were no holes in the wide defroster vents. Stumped, I jimmied the pad, and it came off! Under this plastic cover was an old, cracked up dashpad.

I have never before seen such an item. It looked and fit PERFECT, and covered the entire dashpad. Anyone ever seen or heard of such a thing? I suspect it would rattle like crazy at driving speeds, as it is not secured in any way. But it looked great. Sorry, didn't have my camera to take a pic, but if it's an odd piece, I'll go pick it up and snap some pics.

My car came with one when I bought it. If not properly preped and installed it will bubble up in areas. IMO there garbage.

Re: Plastic Dashpad Cover?

I went back this morning to pick the cover up. I was gonna grab the cracked dash pad, and the cover. The guy told me $20, which I thought was high, but what the heck. When I got to the car, the plastic cover was not as "perfect" as I remembered. In fact, I could not get the plastic cover to fit on the dash pad. I grabbed just the cover, and when I went back, the guy changed his story and wanted $25 for it. The thing was not worth that, so I give it back to him and he starts screaming at me.

Anyway, I snapped some pics. I have no idea what will become of this cover, as I left it at the salvage yard. Old boy at the yard assured me that EVERY Camaro came with one, which I know was not true.

I snapped some pics of the thing. The first pic is installed. I could not get the right side to fit right, I was afraid I was going to break the plastic cover. The second pic shows how wavy the thing is around the large defroster vents. The third pic was the tag that was on the bottom. Unfortunately, it did not turn out as good as I had hoped, but it says "DashTop". I'm thinking its aftermarket.

Re: Plastic Dashpad Cover?

I want to think that JC Whitney sold them for a while...

I have a regular stash of Firebird ones... About 3 or so...

Re: Plastic Dashpad Cover?

I've never seen one in person, but everyone that i have talked to says they don't look or fit good at all. I just spent $400 on a new dash pad. Expensive but I would rather spend it now then buying the cover and finding out i hate it.
