Welcome to TGO. Look at the Vin (lower windshield, driver's side). If you have an LG4, you'll see an H as the 8th letter, IIRC. If you have an L69, the letter will be G. BTW, an L69 is carbed.

Use it as a boat anchor .

Now for the real answer. Thorough tune up. Best bang for the buck is headers accompanied by a larger exhaust and taller gears.

Once upon a time, I had the old LG4. I essentially made it an L69: Bigger cam, Edelbrock intake, some carb tweaks (which you can find on site), L69 dual snorkel, complete L69 exhaust to include exhaust manifolds, Y-pipe, high-flow cat, and intermediate pipe. Even then, I was probably only making a couple of hundred hp. Certainly better than what I started with. I had fun and learned a lot. That said, when you're able, the 350 is really the route to take.

Re: LG4 or L69?

I put 3.42's, a duel snorkel air cleaner, and a better less restrictive exhaust. The 3.42's made a world of difference. Listen to JamesC.

Re: LG4 or L69?

Welcome to TGO.
It would be nice if you were located near me, I could help you out and I've been looking for other third gen owners my age.
But for kicks and giggles, where are you located?

As far as your engine goes, start with a good tune up, make sure you use AC Delco, or Autolite spark plugs.
Just think of your engine as a big vacuum cleaner, the easier and more efficient it gets the coldest, densest air in and then out is your first place to start.
Once you really get into it you can rebuild your carb and put a higher flowing intake on. Start small though, is all I have to say.

This site is a wealth of knowledge that can take you very far.

Re: LG4 or L69?

Welcome to TGO!!! As most people have said, you're not going to make much power with an LG4. However, a set of headers with a good exhaust and a better rearend gear will make a noticable difference.
