1988 Iroc G92
Currently all orig.
Solid body, no rust/rot
76K miles
350 TPI
Auto
I want some opinions from people on how worth it is for me to restore this car to original or to modify it. I know in the end its up to me, but if you were in my shoes what would you do?
I bought the car for 2900, had no idea it was a g92 car until 2 weeks later. I thought i was just a all orig iroc 350
It is a solid car, but needs work such as:
Paint
MINOR interior work
MINOR rust repair
Needs new drivers side GFX and front chin spoiler
Brakes
Brake Pads
Brake Lines (doesnt need them but will give me peace of mind)
Ebrake cable
Wires for the door open dinger thing, headling dinger thing and key dinger thing were cut.
Only things on the car that arent from the factory is:
had to replace a injector plug
alternator
radiator (po, replaced it), but has the orig fans
Other random tune up things
i was in the same boat as you. i decided to keep the all stock look but do what i want on the performance side. i love the way iroc's look but not the way they perform. you could always hang on to the original parts and do both.
No one else has any opinion on what they would do?
You're welcome. I tried to keep mine all original but couldn't. Somethings just had to go. Like ls6iroc said you can have a bit of both worlds. I just wanted mine to run and function decently.
At the Friday night cruise in's I sometimes park beside a 91 that's all modded up. Mine gets more looks and good comments!
What modding were you thinking of doing? You should do what you want to do with the car. Original is great, and so is character.

Well truthfully i would be happy converting to a 6spd, and a nice exhaust system. I really want to get rid of the AIR system, and put on some nice headers to make the engine bay look cleaner. The only thing thats stopping me from converting it to a 6spd is that i would have to cut into the firewall and the trans tunnel.
As you guys know, once you start modding, its hard to stop.
As far as the G92, i know thats the RPO code and not a model. And in 1988 they got the 3.27 gears not 3.23. Just so you know.
Is there any way to figure out how many 350 g92's were made. I know that there were 52XX total, but that includes the 305's
Thanks
Sounds very similar to the car I just bought. 91 Z28 350 G92 80,000 miles. I gave 2K for mine. Its in my garage tore all the way down to the shell. I say make it the way you want it. Thats what I am going to do.
I already have a 6 speed to go in mine, I plan on building a 406, painting it C6 Corvette Jet Stream Blue. New interior, headliner, carpet seat covers. My 6 speed install will be factory perfect because I have the car so far down it will be easy to do. I am also going to put in all new Energy Suspension bushings.

Sounds good, i would love to do something like that.

Sorry, I forgot the 1988 IROC had the BW 9-bolt 3:27 ratio. Still it no big deal. AS you said, you didn't know you had this option.
I'm in the same boat as you. I just purchased a 1990 Iroc with the 350, G80, G92 rear with factory 3.42 gears. I have a 1995 LT1 that I built to go in my 95 TA, but I sold the car and I still have the fresh motor with 425hp sitting in my garage. I wonder if I should keep the Iroc original and put the LT1 in something else. The TPI 350 has 154,000 miles showing on the odometer, but I was told it was rebuilt 10,000 miles ago. It runs good but I want more power out of it. I'm going to start the restoration in Dec. so I have time to figure it out.
I'm almost sure that I will restore it to original form. I figured I could get around 350hp out of the motor. Then I would have a reason to put the LT1 in my Datsun 240z.
There's no reason you couldn't build the engine to something you'd like. It would still be numbers matching if that means anything to you.
If it was me, I'd build the car the way I wanted it to perform. You can keep the "stock" look to it but modify to your hearts content. Enjoy the car or keep it nice for the next owner, up to you.
That's what I'm thinking. I know the TPI can't produce power over 6,000 rpm, but with some good port work on the intake and heads I think I can get another 500 or so RPMs out of it. I figure since it's one of 2,415 out there i should keep it as close to original as possible. By the way I would love to own a '89 20th Ann TA
