wrecked 1992 JY Firebird

This is not my car, but since 1992 Jamaica Yellow's are so rare (47?) and everyone wants one, I figured I would post it, and honestly I don't know which board it belongs to.

Go to https://www.iaai.com/Vehicles/SearchResults.aspx, search for 1992 Pontiac Firebird, and you will see a thumbnail of a 1992 Jamaica Yellow Firebird (with an aftermarket hood decal), which will be at an IAAI auction in Springfield MO, at a date to be determined. It's either a base model or a Formula. The car's 7-digit code on the site is 5979607. A login is required to see more info, which I don't have.

Cars of any year/model can be found this way.

Looks like a base Firebird with the L03 305 TBI.

That's an interesting site! Lots of cars on there that still look pretty decent.

Rs camaro's are getting harder to find. its mostly because 16 year old boys buy them and wrap them around trees or beat them until they no longer run. looks like you have wrecked a few yourself (in your sig). maybe half of the 305 rs cars ever built still run and drive. and 90% of the ones that do run are faded rust buckets. 10 years from now, clean thirdgens will be looked at like restored 1st gens. my point was, that was a very clean, low mileage rs, and you don't see many in that color. I'd love to have that car. I can't believe that was traded in!!!

Re: wrecked 1992 JY Firebird

While I agree that it's getting MORE difficult to find CLEAN thirdgen F-bodies of any kind, I disagree with the statement that a Blue Camaro RS is rare. Regardless of how many are still running and in decent condition, they made a pot load of them. Just by the shear production numbers, they can't be considered rare. I see at least 5 RS Camaros on the streets a week. Granted the majority of them are crap, but this is a small town. I see more 91-92 RS Camaros then I see any other variety in the third generation F-body family.

I understand your point, but I disagree with the statement that the car was rare solely because it's a blue RS. I also can't get behind 99k miles as low mileage. I don't care how many miles a year, anything over 75k miles is NOT low mileage.

Is that how it looks? You assume that since a car is listed as gone but not forgotten in a signature, that I wrecked the car? I've been driving these cars since I was 17. It's been 15 years, and 10 thirdgens, and I've never wrecked any of them. I've been rear ended while sitting at a stop light, and I've crushed a rust bucket when I was in a pinch. I've had a few parts cars, and I've pulled a couple out of the junkyard and turned them into daily drivers. I've also preserved a 60k mile 87 Iroc, a 50k mile 91 RS convertible, and a 120k mile 91 Formula. I guarantee I've done more then my fair share for the preservation and advancement of these cars. Before you make an assumption, and try to group me in with 16 year olds wrapping cars around trees, you should probably slow down and open your eyes.

Edit: I forgot to point out... Cash for clunkers probably gave whoever traded in that RS twice as much as they could have gotten trying to sell it in the paper, or on Craigslist, and they didn't have to deal with a bunch of snot-nosed, punk kids, in the process.

i live in janesville, wisconsin. lots of camaro's, hardly any of them thirdgens. i spend four days a week in madison. tons of people and tons of cars... i've seen maybe 15 thirdgens all year. they are not common around here. we had to go out of state to get both of ours. the 92 came from florida and the the 91 came from michigan. they made like 5,000 blue 92's. that doesn't make it rare, but i have never seen a light blue one for sale (that i can remember) on craigslist or ebay and i have been religiously searching for the past 8 years.

sorry if i offended you, its just that it looks that way on your sig. don't mean to jump to conclusions, the r.i.p. normally means its wrecked... or at least thats what i thought.

i have only got to save one thirdgen, the 92 that we are saving now. it was almost beyond repair when we got it. 121k miles, 3 owners, two of them teenaged, the exhaust was bad, the engine was carbed and running terrible, the suspension was shot, the headlights and non of the electrical stuff worked properly. poor thing had been abused so badly, it was hard to look at it without feeling pity for the car. we fixed it and its been a dd for two years (except for winter). its a great car, very very reliable, and now we are restoring it. we thought we really owed it to the car because its been great to us.

i get offended everytime i see a clean thirdgen show up as a cash-for-clunker. regardless of what its worth in money value, they are awesome cars, and are a huge part of my life. its sad to see one that i could fix and make into a dd or restore in a few months go to a crusher.

Re: wrecked 1992 JY Firebird

Guys, slow down, its not that rare, There were hundreds of base firebirds in yellow, only the GTA, Trans Am and Formula the color is an oddity.

There are a KNOWN JY Firebirds
15 - GTA's (Y83)
24 - Trans AM Convertibles (WS4)
26 - Base Firebird (W/O W68)
30 - Base Firebird Convertibles
31 - FORMULA (W66)
44 - Trans Am's (WS4)
366 - Firebirds (w/W68)
536 - Total

Some other knowns: (included above)
2 - Formula 1LE's (5 speed)
2 - Trans Am 1LE's (5 speed)
NOTE: No known L98,A4 JY 1LE cars.

The car is not "Rare" by any stretch of the imagination, do not go buying it thinking that it is.

"Totaled" is in reference that the payout of the car is in excess of the "Total" value of the car.... At least that is what I am lead to believe. So the insurance company pays out an estimated value to the owner, and it ends up being owned by the ins companies. You sometimes have the option to buy the car back, usually you end up with a "Salvage" title. The T-tops leak, there is rust under the battery tray, so the car is not "Mint" its reasonably clean however for its age...

What does the ACV field represent? If that's the value that the insurance company gave for that Iroc, someone made out like a bandit.

acv??? I would think Actual Value, but not sure... Looking at the pix, I would believe a 44K mile car... $8500 would not be a bad price, especially coming from AZ, where rust is a non issue, of course it would depend on the part of AZ...

Actual Cash Value

This is what the insurance company paid out on the car. Not bad for a 44k mile original. I'd offer them about $3500 now because it will have a salvage title. It's also possible that the ttops aren't latched allowing for the water damage on the back seats. Looks to be a very easy repair!

That's a factory original T-top leak... It's all about the authenticity!
In the real world, if the owner of that Iroc set it out on the corner of a busy car lot, with a $8500 price tag in the window, it'd sit there for months. Set that same car in someones garage and listed in Autotrader or Craigslist with the same price, and it's not going anywhere.
