In way over my head...

My background - I can change a tire, oil, and brakes. That's about it. The car I'm working on has been partially disassembled, but I can't even identify which parts are which. The big question is:

Where do I start?

The car was sitting for a little over a year before I got it, but the car ran before being taken apart, with the exception of a busted radiator. I'm really looking for a guide to put it back together, hopefully with lots and lots of pictures. I have a few books (Haynes manual, Chilton's Guide to Engine Repair and Rebuilding, and Chilton's Chevy Repair Manual 1980-1987), but the photos/diagrams aren't detailed enough.

I attached a couple of photos, the first is of the miscellaneous parts that were taken out (minus the radiator, which I was able to identify all by me lonesome) and the second is the interior of the engine.

I don't know if it'll help or not, but the VIN is 1G1AP8712EL154155

Thanks for the advice and help!

Re: In way over my head...

Cool, a carb'd 2.8. Don't see those that often.

The parts in your first pic are:
Power steering pump, Distributor cap, Alternator, Windshield wiper motor, AC compressor, and your air filter intake assembly.

The cap seems to be an extra, as you already have one installed on your engine, and that alternator doesnt even seem to be for your engine, as your engine is set for v-belts, and that is a serpentine pulley on the alternator, and your motor has one installed already.

Why was it taken apart to that extent? None of that needs to be removed to swap a radiator.

The accessories and pullies on the motor can be annoying to get right. The AC compressor goes to the upper right of the front of the engine, and the power steering pump goes to the bottom right (i think), The wiper motor goes where that circular hole is to the left of your master cylinder, and the intake goes, of course, on top of your carb, with the 'snorkel' facing the driver side headlights.

Re: In way over my head...

Thanks for the reply! Though I have to say, there is no need for "of course" as I honestly wouldn't have know that before

Will the alternator work if I hook it up using a v-belt? The car came with a couple, and it looks like one of them will fit.

I think the power steering pump hoses were leaking, though I'm not sure why it was taken apart as much as it was. I'm gonna try and put it all back together and see if it'll start, then go from there.

Re: In way over my head...

Ok, I'm stuck. The power steering pump was disconnected by cutting off the hoses instead of unfastening them from the pump, and I can't get the pressure hose out of the crimped metal piece. Undoubtedly that's what it's designed for, but is ther any way to remove the hose, or am I stuck (lol) buying a new one?

There should be a nut thats part of that crimped piece, slip a box-end wrench over it.

If the hoses were cut, you'll have to buy new ones - can't take the rubber hose out of the crimped ends, or else it'll leak - lots of pressure in a power steering system.
