1983 Chevrolet Camaro Z28 Crossfire

Hi,for all those who don't know me, I live in Blighty with my wife and two kids. A couple of years ago, we bought Bumblebee, our 1983 Chevrolet Camaro Z28 Crossfire. Apart from the engine, mechanically he's all original (smog gear removed) He's been repainted, given a set of Torque Thrust IIs and a set of custom seat covers. We absolutely love him and proudly take him to shows where he draws big crowds.

We have an awards scheme here that funds unusual projects and we've sumitted an application for a very unusual road trip: We want to bring bumblebee back to New York, drive him across the states back to the former Van Nuys site and to the site of the former dealer. We also want to meet 3rd gen fans along the way, see a bit of 'real' America as well as taking in the sights. I have submitted the initial proposal and if accepted, will need to draft up a more detailed itinery. Here's where you come in!

I know that running crossfire 3rd gens with the solenoid flaps are rare nowadays, especially one in our condition. I would greatly appreciate any members who could help me verify this, help to detail the history a bit more (I have original road tests etc) I would also like suggestions for the route to take,as well aspeople who may be interested to meet up with us along the way, maybe even let us pitch our tent some place. We are looking to come in August time, so if there are any events and shows that we could attend, that would also be very cool.

I don't know if this contravienes any board rules but you can either PM me or email me on ks2tuition@aol.co.uk

The idea may not get off the ground, but if it does, it will be the road trip of a lifetime dontchya think?

Very cool idea. And very pretty car. Take a ton of pics and have the co-pilot do a log of the cool stuff so ya don't forget later.

I'd suggest NY to Chicago, then Route 66:

You'll get most of the geography of the States in there. New England coast, over the hilly Appalachians to the Great Lakes. Great food in Chicago will last through corn-ville Illinois. St Louis to Tulsa is hilly and fun. OKC offers a car show almost daily in Aug, as well as a few air shows. OK City to Amarillo sucks, but your gas mileage would be good. Straight boring prairie land. New Mexico makes it more interesting with rocky desert. Arizona through Flagstaff has mountains and canyons that are a blast to drive through. Then the crazy Mohave desert straight out of movies, and finally LA.

It's a real interesting drive, with a lot of different flavors. For example, New Mexico feels like a 1950s tourist trap with all the cheesy sights to see, but Missouri feels like a relaxed old-people vacation. Then there is always stuff to do in the great lakes area.

It's been about 10 years, but I'd do it again if I had a reason.

Isn't the former Van Nuys factory a mall now?

Jensen, that looks an awesome route! Thanks for your reply.I am trying to look into the legalities of bringing a car that's registered overseas and driving it across the states.I think because it can be classed as an event, that I don't need to re-register it. Which motoring authority do I need to contact to get permissions? (Its called the DVLA here)
