Re: Calling all 1984 Recaro T/A, aka RPO Y84, owners
My dad and I have one.. I have always loved it growing up and I just found this website about 2 days ago. I have not been able to leave it
I want to restore it back to how it was originally.. Can you help me out with finding the rare parts like the Recaro seats and the wood grain looking interior? By the way it has only 55,000 original miles but it definitely needs ALOT of work.
Here is a quick pic of the interior.

Now does anyone know where I can get new Recaro seats or should I just take them to an upholstery shop and have them redone like original?
Yea I was going to say the same thing. The wood grain is not original. And you have a couple options as far as the seats go, you could get the seat covers and do them yourself (I think they are available), you could have an upholstery shop do them, or you could get new ones. I'd say if you can't get seat covers and do it yourself, your best bet would be the upholstery shop. Don't know if you can get new ones.
Re: Calling all 1984 Recaro T/A, aka RPO Y84, owners
I'd be glad to help. Looks like you have a pretty nice Recaro. I see some of the interior things are a bit worn, but she is by no means in terrible shape. My steering wheel has the "Goo" as well. Trying to find a good one is tough, but they're out there. The driver's knee bolster on the console is the same deal, mine is shot too, but I scored a mint one from a 1984 T/A (non Recaro), parts car I bought & stripped. The Tan leather Recaro seats were only used in the 1983 and 1984 Recaro T/A and every once and awhile they turn up on Craigslist and Ebay. Nice ones usually go for well over $500, and I've seen trashed ones go for $200 or more. Unfortunately, there are no replacement covers for these Recaros, unless you get extremely lucky and find an NOS one on Ebay. You'll need to take them to a quality shop to have them redone correctly. The netting on the headrests are probably the hardest thing to repair if they're damaged, sometimes good headrests turn up too, but they're also pricey.
Couple questions/requests:
On your dash, just left of the steering wheel there is a White decal of some kind, could you post up a pic of that?
Also, could you post a few pics of the exterior of your car?

The wheel and knee bolster are also B20 Luxury option parts. As well as the leather shift knob and brake handle. The wheel I've seen done by either Year One or Classic Industries. Point is you should be able to get a direct replacement. Also, I don't know if I am going to do anything with it, and I only have the passenger one, but I have a recaro seat done in grey cloth at the moment, as there used to be recaro front seats in my TA. It is sitting as a game chair in one of the rooms in the house. I'm sure since it came out of my car I can sell it if I wanted to. But I doubt I'll do it.
Also Lazin you can find more info on 84 Recaros on http://earlythirdgen.com both me and Brother Al are on there as well. Just thought I'd mention it. There are a bunch of knowledgeable people and more Recaro owners of 82 and 84 vintage on that site.

In case you don't see my PM, I'll host the photos for you so that you can share with all here. I'm sure we'd like to see the car. Email me the photos at jt@thirdgen.org and I'll help.

i have come across a 1982 Recaro T/A sittin by a barn in SC. picked it for next to nothin because i could not bear the thought of letting it rot where it sat. heres the specs i have on it. all factory LG4 w/3 speed auto. i am told that is very rare. any one know about that. also it has tan interior w/PMD seats. the T/A has 96k miles and sat for 14 years. it has been shot 3 times, 1 in the door and one right in the spot where the door glass meets the sail panel. there is some rust holes in the floor and the battery tray is rotted through. it has a drum posi rear. it also has a flat hood. the car was built in norwood.

Did any 1982 Recaro's have the Y84 Stamped on the cowl plate?
You had both Norwood and Van Nuy's producing the cars.
Since this was the first year for the third gen, what standards were in place on stamping out the cowl plates?
This was an assembly line and different people would be stamping the plates out at both plants.
Hood's, wheels, whole interiors and seats can be changed throughout the years. Door handle inserts can be installed.
Without the window sticker and/or build sheet, the only way to know for sure is to contact PHS and get the cars information.
The expert on the 1982 Recaro is Kizz and the following photos are from his site. I do not see Y84 on any of the cowl plates.

Re: Calling all 1982, 1983, & 1984 Recaro Edition T/A, (aka RPO Y84 Trans Am S/E) own
I have never seen Y84 stamped on the Fisher Body tag. The AQ9 Recaro seat RPO code is the usual identifier for a Recaro T/A since Recaro seats where only dealer installed on standard Trans Ams.
travrock, the flat hood(indicating standard Level II suspension), LG4/auto drivetrain, and tan interior with PMD seats are all big givaways that your car is not a Recaro T/A. The '82 Y84 Recaro T/A option included black/gold paint, dark charcoal interior with matching factory installed Recaro Ideal N front seats, Level III WS6 suspension which the turbo bulge hood was part of, T-Tops, and choice of LU5 Crossfire/Auto or LG4 carb/M4 manual drivetrain.

Bingo !! thanks Dennis for backing this up,It's so obvious he doesnt have a RECARO
I was thinking Y84 for 1984 Model year but missed it on the '82 not on the '84
Yes good info !!! The AQ9 seats were available on NON recaro 82's as dealer installed.Few years back,I saw a white hardtop 82 T/A in Phoenix with the dealer installed Recaro inteior CHEAP !! But couldn't get it in time

Possible but VERY improbable for someone to go that far to "Alter" a regular T/A LMAO
Anyways Simo your right my bad Y84 is the package and AQ9 is the stamp code for the seats
I was staring at 3 of my Van Nuys '82 Recaro data plates and missed that.

To clear things up,
1982 Trans Am's had the cowl hood ONLY on the WS6/WS7 suspension cars
1983-1984 Trans Am's had the cowl hood standard regardless of suspension package

I just saw one of these recaros at the junk yard it was like seeing a beautiful bird dead it was sad. I took the map pocket thing the rest was pretty much trash... even the seats.

Hate to bring this sad news but i had a '82 Recaro come in and it's getting crushed,to much rust since the moron owner parked it on grass for 15 years !!!! errrr idiot !!!
Re: Calling all 1982, 1983, & 1984 Recaro Edition T/A, (aka RPO Y84 Trans Am S/E) own
My car is a 1983 Recaro T/A. It was built in norwood ohio for resale in Canada. I am the third owner as best I can tell. The car has resided in Canada (Not sure where, Hopefully PHS will be able to tell me what dealership It was originally sold at), Vermont, Pennsylvania and finally New York. The worst of its rust is in the engine compartment and the mandatory floor pan. I spoke with somebody I know who owns a body shop and they said it is highly fixable and they would be willing to undertake replacing the floor pan, strut tower, and patching the firewall as necessary once money permits. Although this car will never be a show car I plan on repairing it the right way with new metal and taking care of it (by which I mean not neglecting it, and not driving it in the rain or snow) so it will be on the road for years to come.
She seems to be factory equipped with every option available in 1983 including the following
N09: Locking filler door
D80: Rear Spoiler
CC1: T Tops
LU5: 305 Crossfire (With 700R4)
WS6 suspension
10 bolt Safe-T-Track/positraction Disc Rear (Not sure of the ratio)
Hatch Defroster
Rear Wiper
(and I assume 15" gold turbocast wheels, too bad they were not with the car when I got it)
Power mirrors
Power Windows
Cruse control
Tilt column
*edit* I just wanted to add that I was able to get a complete list of rpo codes thanks to www.compnine.com. A copy of the list is attached for those who are interested. Most of the things on the list are still on the car with the exception of the rims (N24), the engine block heater (K05), and wheel locks (PB4). I am glad compnine had my vin in there database because as best I can tell I got cheated out of a build sheet.
Mods:
Headers (installed by PO)
Duel 3" Free flowing exhaust (installed by PO)
Air Pump Delete (done by PO)
AR Type 39 Rims (installed by PO)
BFG Radial T/As (Just installed them last week)
My future plans for the car (once the body work is completed) include a new interior, new motor, New suspension, larger brakes and possibly a manual transmission conversion.

Guys - I own a 1982 Recaro Trans Am. Its in nice shape and the seats are in fairly decent shape, but I am trying to find fabric for them. I would like to buy an extra set of Recaros and have them redone in the future. I don't want to mess with the seats in the car because they are original and if an upholsterer screws them up I may have to kill them. I have seen the standard PMD seats from 1982 with a similar fabric. My back seats seem to have the same fabric on it and they look like standard seats. Is this the same as the Recaro fabric?
I am trying to get fabric from SMS fabrics, but it has been tough to match it with just pictures of the seats. They say they can reproduce it if they don't have it. If anyone has a set of ratty old seats and they can spare some fabric, maybe I can get SMS to match the fabric or reproduce it. Thanks in advance for any help.

I don't own a recaro BUT there is one set at local junk yard no head rests and need some foam but frames looked good and might be able to be saved if your interested I can pull them by tuesday I would have but they looked like too much work for me

Are they from a 1982? How much do you think it would cost to ship a set to NY from where you live?
If cost to ship is too much, could you get me some of the fabric if they are charcoal grey?
Thanks

I assume they would be well over 100 just to ship. I think they are like a tan gray. I can look into it more if you want tho. I wish they were in good shape I would have pulled them and got them recovered but cost me too much and would have seemed odd in a maro.

Unfortuantly our only option is to have them custom upholstered I have been looking into my options for having mine redone. I too live in NY. I have narrowed it down to 2 businesses:
Jo-Leas http://www.jo-leaauto.com/
Gillin's Upholstery www.gillincustomdesign.com
Both companies felt that they could do a nice job recovering my Recaro Ideal N seats and back seat.

What kind of material were you going to use?
If you have a sample of the old material, send a swatch to SMS. There is a chance that they have it, or they can have it made. Alot of people who have these seats could benefit. Are your seats shot?
If you don't want to deal with them, I would be more than happy to give it a shot if you could spare a piece of the cloth.
Let me know either way.
Thanks

a friend of mine has an 82 recero edition, origonally had the 305 crossfire
and automatic trans, a previous owner put in a 350 and 4 spd.
rear disk, 73,000 miles on the body. power locks, windows, mirrors, radio antenna, then we installed a factory hatch release.
