1989 Firebird GTA With 445 Miles On The Clock
I've seen a few nice 3rd gen up for sale recently but nothing like this. Advertised as 1989 Firebird GTA with only 445 miles on it! I thought the Firebird guys might like to see it, lots of high res photos. The GTA isn't my favorite trim package among the firebirds but this one is just beautiful. Even so, I think the guys asking price of $48,000 is about 2X more than it would bring at auction. $30,000 might be a more reasonable asking price but I really don't have a lot of similar cars to compare it to for pricing.

That guy has one of the nicest collections of 80s and 90s GM cars that I have ever seen on the internet. He considers a car that is driven in the rain a beater. Check out his websites for more. Many many cars with less than a thousand miles on them.

Re: 1989 Firebird GTA With 445 Miles On The Clock
This is a beautiful car. I would say this is still a brand new car. I dont think he'll get 48,000 for it. I would say it would only go for 30,000 or so. I wonder about the tires still being round. Hopefully he had it on jackstands. A guy I know has an 87 trans am with 12,000 miles on it and he bought new tires for it because the original gatorbacks were flat spotted bad. I put them on my iroc and I see what he meant about it shaking you down the road. I've taken them off since then. Have to remember that those tires are over 20 years old and probably should be replaced. Ok for show I guess.

many will disagree with this post, but thats the type of condition 3rd gen firebird id like to throw a brand new, 0 miles L92 LS + 6 speed in, i know i know, its a collector car, but it'd be like having the car brand new, the way its supposed to be, except, ill take a 445 mile 91 or 92 GTA.

Re: 1989 Firebird GTA With 445 Miles On The Clock
Heck, a guy was selling an 82 Z28 with more miles for 59k so why the hey not? Personally, I'm going to buck common wisdom this year and put new windows in my house instead of a collector car but I see the appeal. Problem is 1000 miles on this takes you down to 20k or so. A museum piece, and a good one.

You can buy a 89 gta and have it completely restored for less than the price of this car, Besides who says factory cars are done right?

Re: 1989 Firebird GTA With 445 Miles On The Clock
I guess it depends on what kind of shape the 6 cars are in. A Concours Paint job will cost a pretty penny(i'm talking striping it down to the shell and doing a proper overspray type paint job). Like 10k and up. It could be more or less depending on the car and/or how much you do yourself..
I had about 9k in mine back in the early 90s (its not concours but I didnt want any tape lines) and I did a lot of work myself.

Beautiful car, legitimately worth around $25k, possibly $30k for the right buyer, but no more.
Honestly, I think he's got one quirky collection filled with genuine turds. I'd take that '96 Cobra though.
That said, my two turds pale in comparison to his collection of turds, so there you go.

That's hilarious...I thought I was the only one I routinely search eBay for 75-95 specifically...primarily GM, but I can appreciate the random LX Notch, SVO Mustang, Thunderbird Turbo Coupe (and Super Coupe) and Dodge turbo oddities like IROC Daytonas....

I don't think I'd call his collection full of turds... he does have an unconventional taste as far as collectors go. Most people of his age and affluence go for the 60's cliches. He loves Cadillacs and he loves 75-95 cars. Some of his choices are unusual but it's refreshing.

You could own this 911...
http://bringatrailer.com/2012/01/30/...che-930-turbo/
I'm proud of the price run up on these Third Gen F-bodies that people thought were practically worthless before the housing market crashed. I have some doubts but hope it survives when the economy improves. It's great for those who own them right now. But with all due respect, I'm buying that 911 Turbo 100 times over before I buy a 48k GTA.

Kurt,
I keep forgetting to comment on your sig pic...as the former owner of multiple siamese cats, I applaud your custom siamese runners Great cats...have a hard time picturing one on a TPI, though you seem to have pulled it off well!
Charlie,
I won't lie...Rivieras aren't my thing, but I seem to have a growing obsession with later Toronado Trofeos, Reattas and 4.9 Eldorados...am I allowed to admit that?

Re: 1989 Firebird GTA With 445 Miles On The Clock
Some cars deserve to be museum pieces, it would be a shame to "drive the hell out of it" IMO. Yes, cars were built to drive, etc., but a select few should be saved as trailer queen perfection to serve as references for how the cars were built, etc.
As for the TTA above, very nice car and probably worth an amount not all that far off the asking price of $50k. Only thing about TTAs is that if you've seen one, you've seen them all, and you have to really love tan and gold. Nice car but you'd REALLY have to love it to spend that kind of coin, you could get plenty of beautiful muscle cars for $50k.

I'd buy a mint one with 50,000 miles on it for $6,000 and then drive the hell out of it. This one, I'd go to the garage and stare at it with a stupid, perplexed look on my face unsure of what to do with it. That's really the problem with ultra low mile (<1,000) cars. You can't drive them without torching the value.

Yeah... Wait, no! If that car fell in my lap, I would still drive it daily, and not think twice of popping the clutch.

I wouldn't pay $50k for that Trans Am, but if I had a mental lapse and did anyway, it would be a museum piece.
If I paid $20k for that Trans Am, I'd have no problem driving it. Figure the depreciation like this:
$20k at <1k miles
$12-18k <20k miles
$10-15k <30k miles
$5 - 12k <50k miles
$5 - 10k <75k miles
This of course assumes you maintain the car in excellent condition, which costs money. It also assumes a stable, non-varying market. Thirdgens could jump in value to where high-mileage cars fetch more than they used to. The spread is based on options/desirability of car. A 50k mile TTA is worth more than a 50k mile GTA.
Again it all depends on what you want from a car and what you want to do with your money.

I can see myself paying for that.
The more collectible our cars become the more these will go for.
GTA/IROC/1LE they are becoming desired by guys who dream about having them. Not by most of us.
Fact is not many people have that kind of money. Those that have the money have the collector cars.

I don't know if any of you guys watch car auctions on TV , like the Mecum auctions, but I watch them pretty closely and I have seen low mile/ high quality 3rd gens come up in price over the past 3 or 4 years.
Also interesting are the 2nd gen Firebird T/A's. Wasn't that long ago that you couldn't hardly give them away. Now, low mile, clean examples are bringing in the mid $20K's low $30's. Some of the "Bandit" T/A's even higher. I see a lot more Camaros come up for auction than Firebirds, 2 to 3 times as many, which is pretty much the ratio I see in the current "For Sale" ads on the internet.
Here are some that have come up recently at auction. Not all sold, but you can see what the high bid was.
http://www.mecum.com/auctions/lot_de...D=FL0110-88171 sold: $20,000
