It could just be the manual trannys. My car has one but i have a conglomeration of an 82 th200 and 83 t5 car. It not sits under a th350 though.

Maybe it was used from 1982 - 1985??? James, you might think about posting a poll asking this question on the Transmission forum.

I've only had one reply to the poll I placed in the trans forum--82-85 auto. Go figure.

3 speed auto??? I thought the only year not to get the 4 speed 700R4 was 1982... Or was it a mid year change??? or possibly an option.

That's an automatic trans x-member from all the one's I've seen.
Every car in the j-y here is an auto.. made is impossible to get a spare standard x-member when I hacked mine up for dual exhaust on my bird.

According to the Parts & Illustration Manual:

All LQ9s had a secondary crossmember with all transmissions.

All LH0s had it with the MD8.

LB8s had it from 82-89 with the MD8 and 82-86 with the MV9, MK5 and MK6.

LG4s and LB9s had it from 82-86 with the MV9, MD8, MK5 and MK6.

In all cases, the MV9 used 14019296, the MD8 used 14059976, the MV9 used 14019296, and the MK5 and MK6 used 14050111.

My 86 Trans Am LG4 5 speed had the one piece x-member.
It also worked with the 4L60E I had in there with the LT1 temporarily.

My 88 Formula has the one piece x-member as well and that one worked with my 700R4 and with my T5.

Not sure how to figure out where they were made, but my VIN is 1G1AP87G7EN159148 for the 1984 Z28 (the VIN decoder said it was a Chevy Pontiac made in the USA in Canada... is it broken?)

I'll have to dig out my 88 Iroc VIN.

Norwood, the last digit before the build sequence will be N or L, N=Norwood, L=Van Nuys

I'll get back to you on mine being Van Nuys or Norwood, I am assuming Van Nuys as it is a West Coast car, but I'll check when I get home.

I was mistaken, 1984 Trans Am LG4 T-5, no secondary cross member, Norwood built (weird, car from Washington built in Norwood instead of Van Nuys)

Why is that weird? I have 3 87 Formula's 2 are from Van Nuys and I live about 5 hours from Norwood. Granted the 2 van nuys cars, 1 was purchased originally in Flordia, and the other in Arizona, the car that was originally purchased in Indiana was an Norwood car.

I figured that it had to do a lot with area as to which assembly plant the car would come from. I can deffinately see Arizona being a L car, Florida would suprise me a little. However, I guess it is a much more random distribution then I expected

Well, I guess that I'm as confused as I was before--pretty much a natural state, however. Is the piece designed as a vibration dampener (when I replaced the rotting rubber donuts, the difference was significant even with poly)?

Yes, it helps with vibration transferring into the chasis, its the 3rd engine mount.

All of mine have that mount x-member. and that is all stock as far as the x-member goes. I finally found a place that sells the secondary transmission mounts (those donut looking things on that one below the trans mount) I need to order a set up for my cars.. supposed to reduce vibration even more..

The poly's not bad if torqued to spec.

I've owned over 25 Camaros and Firebirds since 92 and most of them were 84-86 cars of various types (mostly Camaros). With one exceptions all the automatics used the 2 piece X-member and the manuals used the 1 piece.

Almost all the 87+ cars I've worked with were autos and used the 2 piece X-member. The 87 5-speed Coupe I own right now has a 2 piece and it's the only time I've ever seen one on a 5-speed.

I'm re-building an 86 5-speed and just pulled a 1 piece out of it !!!! After reading this post It seems as if there was little rhyme or reason for the use of the x-members. The 2 piece will obviously give the tranny more cushion and they are interchangeable from tranny to tranny for the 84 and up years.

P.S. If your using Poly Bushings than you may as well install metal spacers cause you are going to feel EVERYTHING !!!

Let's see now...

83 LG4/auto, 86 LG4/auto, 86 LB9/auto, 86 LB9/auto, 87 L98/auto, 89 L03/auto, 91 L98/auto, 91 L03/auto, all have/had the single piece crossmember.

84 2.8/5spd, 91 LH0/auto, had/have the 2-piece.

In my experience, based on my own cars, others I've worked on or gotten parts from, the 2 piece crossmember was early V8/auto and most 6 cylinders. Physically they both interchange. I personally wouldn't use the 2-piece crossmember on anything. All it will do is allow more movement in the drivetrain, which is exactly what we don't want... Unless of course you want the transmission mounting to flex instead of transfering the power to the ground.

Wacky, i've never seen that bit before.
I have the '82 TA with T-10, and unless it was removed by a PO (doubt it), then I didn't have it.

Axle/Gears: Sag 3.73, B&W 3.45
ok, I decided to do some research in the PArts & Illustration catalogs
APEIRON stated this before.
The following used the "Trans Support Upper"
I4: 82-86
82 & 83 A3 MV9 14019296
84 - 86 A4 MD8 14059976
82 - 86 M5 14050111

V6: 87-92
87 - 92 A4 MD8 14059976

V8: LG4, LC0, L69, LB9 & L98
82 - 83 A3 MV9 14019296
83 - 86 A4 MD8 14059976
82 - 83 M4 MK5 14050111
83 - 86 M5 MK6 14050111

The other cars, such as the 87-92 V8 cars used the other type mount without the upper support. I could not find info on the 82-86 V6 cars, or the CFI, or L69, I would assume they are the same as the other V8 cars. The LC0 (TTA) is completely different.

It should be noted that the LOWER support has the following part numbers:

L4
82-86 MT 14050112
82-83 A3 14019297
83-86 A4 10029108

V6
87-92 A4 14050112
87-92 M5 14094483

V8
82-86 Not listed
87-92 14050110

Can anyone get an accurate weight reading of the crossmember with the secondary still attached for me? Please!

I sold mine with the original trans last year but want the weight of what it was for comparison to the new CM I made for the car with the T56.

Not to add more confusion, but my 84 Z28 L69 has the secondary piece

Wait, thats what the chart says. Okay, so chalk one up to okfoz's chart.

Re: Secondary Cross Member

ok this is an old threadi know but i was always curious about this secondary crossmember ever since i had the 82 Z28 LG4 4 speed that had one of these secondary ones under it(converted to th350, clutch pedal still in car)

my 82 trans Am LG4 th200c has the single crossmember and it was all stock original untouched

i cant remembr on others, such as the 84 s/e 2.8 5 speed or the 85 trans am L69 700r4 or the 84 z28 same as the 85 drivetrain or the 83 z28 also L69 and 700r4, i think all of them were single xmember im about 90% sure, as i dont recall ever seeing a secondary type crossmember until the 82 z28 last fall, i was pretty surprised to see such a thing

good thread here

Since this was revived from the dead again... Goes to show you how useless those books are for purposes of historical accuracy.
