I have 1986 trans am, thats what my title says. The car is a GTA, but everything ive read says the GTA did not come out until 1987. As far as i know it has everything the GTA is supposed to have. The pontiac dealer told me there was no difference between the two cars, is that true? if anyone can give me some info about this car it would sure help.

First off welcome to the board but Youv'e answered your own question,GTA's were not made until model year 1987,but what makes you think its a GTA,badges? If you are saying it has all the exterior GTA features, monochromatic paint,GTA/Firebird nose emblem,GTA Trans AM front fender badges, gold firebird sail panel emblems, and 16 inch gold lace wheels,it could still be a fake. The surest way to tell is your service parts ID sheet inside of the center console, which lists all your options. If it doesn't have a "Y84"which is the RPO for the GTA option, then its a T/A with badges. For more information go www.gtasourcepage.com and www.transamgta.com 2 other cool sites with message boards, and tons of info

Well first, there were maybe 2 '86 GTA's made as test cars so that right there means that your car isn't one. GTA's were made only from 1987-1992, it's that simple. In order to be GTA it MUST have one of the 3 things: B2L, L98, Y84. If it does not have any of these then it is NOT real GTA. The only exception I could think of would be a '87 GTA with LB9 and the 5-speed but it would have to be a very early GTA not to have Y84.

Look on your dash zima, copy the VIN number and post it here, we can straighten this out. It sounds like there has been some misrepresentation here, I cant blame you for the confusion, this happens alot.

Now I am What info has been misrepresented? She said she thinks she has a GTA,but is not saying why she thinks that. The vin will not differentiate a T/A from a GTA,just engine configuration. The 8th vin digit on an LB9 car is an "F".Her title says the car is an 86.Like was said buy even herself,GTA's were not made until the following year.Badges or not,no "Y84" its not a GTA period.
Zima,if you have just recently purchased the car,and aren't happy its not a real GTA,I would see if there is a return policy(some dealerships have a 30 day one)All they will probably tell you is"they thought it was a GTA to",and they probably did as dealers usually dont know $hit about RPO codes and have been had at auctions and tradeins as well. There is probably no proof of deception, although its a lesson learned and you will get tired of hearing it,that is something you should have checked BEFORE you bought the car.The saying goes"let the buyer beware".Good luck on whatever you decide.
Zima could have a "civil action" especially if she paid more because of her believe that it was a GTA than a TA. It's irrelevant if the seller claims ignorance about it's true history, they sold the car and they scooped the cash. It will be up to the car lot to go after the person that sold them the car.
Well, since i traded for the car from a friend,a year ago,for my deseaced husbands painting van and eguiptment, about three thousand dollars worth, had the engine completly rebuilt,by another friend,(because the engine was blown) 500 dollars for parts and such, had to put it in the shop, still didnt run right, two fuel injectors and 600 dollars later and it still has problems! what is my car worth? and if i ever want to sell it do i take off the three gta badges on the outside ,the steering wheel and the glove box pouch? I probably will never sell it,but hey who knows!!!! All i can do is laugh about it and take as a lesson learned. frown
Man, I'm really sorry ot hear about that. I'd say it maybe worth about $3-5K. don't fell to bad about it, it sounds alot like my first Firebird, a 1982 S/E. At the time I finally got rid of the car which I had paid only $350 for with no engine I had over $7,000 in it!
