DO NOT POST FULL VINs

It has recently come to my attention that a VIN can be stolen and a cars identity can also be stolen I will not go into logistics, but from this time forward and as I find old complete VINs listed in the History boards I will be removing the last numbers from it.

Apparently it is possible to steal a VIN and transfer it to a new car and have 2 cars with legit titles with the same VIN running around. At that point it would be up to the owner of the real car to prove that theirs is legit. Keep in mind ALL information can be made, modified and changed. I will not go into details as not to make any criminals.

Also it is possible to do some other nasty things to owners of rare expensive cars to where it would make it VERY difficult to sell a car. For example put a lein on any car they wanted, I will not discuss how, I just know it is possible and I will not allow anyone to post an entire VIN for their safety.

In this same vein I will also warn any potential e-bay buyers that it has happened where someone purchased a rare desireable car off of e-bay even after they had someone check it out and had been had. A person selling a car had put a lein on a car and it did not show up until after the sale went through. The purchaser found out 90 days after the purchase of the lein, the seller was no where to be found and in order to keep the car from the bank he had to pay the loan amount effectively paying twice for the car. The purchaser prior to buying the car had a reputable person look at the car verify that the car what it was. What was not looked into was the background of the seller.

Also if you have a collector car and do not drive it do NOT allow the license tag expire as 5 years they fall off of most states records, making it all the more easy for criminals to steal a cars identity. One safety net is to get a historic plate, or in some states like MI you can get a plate from the year of mannufacture and use an authentic plate, these plates do not expire and cannot be transferred.

PHS is apparently doing about 14 investigations a WEEK on items that are listed above. I highly recommend that you protect yourself and your car.
