just an fyi on the corvette gatorbacks, if they are original to the corvette they won't be correct for the iroc. The corvette tires were wider, 50 or 55s i believe.

The IROC-Z had 245-50/16. I just replaced mine with BF Goodrich g-force sports and they are a sticky tire. I really like the way the car handles with those. I had Dunlop Sp5000s on the car since 2000 and I can fishtail the car and light 'em up easily. These new tires grip nice.
I don't recommend putting an old tire on the car as the safety of the driver and potential vehicle damage could occur. I don't know what the future holds for this car, so safety is my first concern.
Keith, can you get a detailed photo of the Freedom II battery? I'm looking into having caps made for current batteries that resemble the original for car shows.
Did I see a slight discoloration on the rear carpets in one of those pics? If so, email me and I will provide you with how I cleaned mine.
FWIW, maybe I should sell my rims and tires and get some 17s for my car!!!
Was it ever discovered WHY it went into the trailer at 4 miles, then just left there, never touched again?
Ya know,
I thought of that myself, but never did ask the guy who sold it. That question has had me wondering myself. Also, why wouldent someone invest 30.00 in a car cover. Man, can you imagine what that car would look like if it was covered all of those years? Especially in a climate controlled building. It would be flawless!
I will email him and find out. I will post back once I hear back from him...

Sure, I will snap some detailed pictures on Saterday for you. I am planning on washing and possibly polishing and waxing the car saterday as well. Went to Napa after work and spent 100.00 on cleaning supplies. (We have a charge account there) I took your advice and bought some Mothers #40 Vinyl & Rubber cleaner and conditioner. Also bought some Meguiars Proffessional Cleaner Wax, Meguiars Gold Glass car wash soap, Mothers clay bar(if needed) some new wash mits, wax applicators, Liquid Glass, and some aluminum brightener. I know I have to be very carefull with that stuff, but it should do wonders for things like the alternator and other aluminum that has dulled over the years. I have used it before and works pretty good if used carefully.

Yes, you did indeed. That’s what I believe from the floor mats that were moved around in the car at some point. There are also some stains when you fold the seats down. The rear floor mats were sandwiched behind the rear seat and that rubber backing came off on the carpet. Should come off really easy with some "goo gone", or "oops cleaner" Just have to be careful of the odors. Do you have any suggestions?? Basically need something that will take off tar, because that is what is looks and feels like.

Hey, thats and Idea. With the low miles your car has, they are probably like new, right??? The rims I mean...
It would be better for the car in general if he put some miles on it. Trailer queens IMO are dumb. Cars are meant to be driven and if its only got 4.4 or however many miles now hes still got tons of space to still call it low mileage. Yea he could drive it on and off a trailer for the rest of its existence but whats the fun in that.

I disagree. This car is a collectors piece now, thats the fun of it. If he wanted just a low mileage Iroc to show he could have bought a differant car. Keep the miles under 10.

I'm one that believes (Cars were made to be driven, not stored on mothballs.) But this is the first time I've ever wanted to see a car simply driven/rolled on & off a trailer, in & out of a car parking spot.
While the car may not be a "historical" COPO-type first gen/convertible TTA car, it is still a car that needs preservation. I almost debate leaving it as-is, or returning it to factory new specs.
Restored, it is "just another restoration, albeit extremely low miles"...Preserved, it would be just as it was found. Just wash & clean it up, yeah, but make the as-found pics, part of its show display.
i agree wth coyote, in 40 years if this car has less than 10 miles on it, then you could put it on barret jackson or something and it would be equal to seeing 1938 buick with only 10 miles on it. it would go for SOOOO much more money than if it had 10K on it.

under ten miles?
IMO if its really at 4.4 now, it should remain at 4.4, it is the LAST and ONLY IROC like it. if they guy wants to drive a IROC, and is a car collector, im sure he can afford a nice low mile IROC and drive that around(like 4-6 grand tops?). just putting this car on the road w/ dumb teenage girls driving texting scares me, i ot rearended by one in moms car last year, i hate driving my car in traffic for that very reason.

I want to see it put back in storage for another 25 years. car cover this time.

why? i mean yeah under 10 cool... low miles... but why not under 5? why anymore than 4.4? if your going to have such a super preserved low mile car that doesn't get driven like an IROC should, why go up to ten miles? i don't understand the logic.
Just an FYI on the 4.3 mile IROC-Z from eBay. I have been in contact with the new owner. They have no interest in joining or communicating on message forums as the gentleman is an older guy from Indiana and he is a car collector. The new owner has another person communicating with me and they are asking for help in the restoration of the car.
Guess you didn't read the 1st post
Let's keep this thread productive for NEW-85IROC-Z
i said 10 miles because id drive the car down the road once to enjoy it, and then drive it on the trailer wherever i take it. if you saw the car on ebay with 11 miles would you look it any differently? no. im not argueing at all lol, just stating my case. it doesnt matter if theres 10 miles or 5 miles. as long as there isnt like 50 miles or so, i think it wouldnt matter.

i honestly dont think this car would be driven though. like somebody else sadi you can get a nice low milage iroc for 6K or so. you bought this car for prolly over 20K so why drive it? i usually HATE HATE HATE trailer queens, but this car needs to be trailered. and im going to assume that the owner of the car and the guy detailing it are smart enough to see gold in front of there face. there not going to anything but love and care for this car.

You cannot buy a low mileage, original, MINT IROC-Z for $6,000 anymore, those days have been long gone for a good while now. Anyone who thinks so needs to search AutoTrader and eBay. Anyhow, I'd hope this car is being made to run just to show that it can and to get on and off trailers. A car like this should probably never see street time ever.
Please, PLEASE tell me that odometer won't be going up at all!
This will be a trailer queen right??
We don’t have any intention of driving it. To tell you the truth, I am really not sure what the owner is going to do with it, but I know he is not going to have anyone drive it. The odometer went from 4.3 to almost 4.4 miles from pushing it on the trailer, then unloading it to us, then we have moved it a couple of times inside our service department. It has not left the building however.
I am going to talk the owner it letting me take it to a few car shows. I’m not sure if he will want to come or not, but I know he wouldn’t mind me doing so...I just need to get this thing as clean as it can get. I miss having a toy and going to car shows. I once had an 88 Fiero GT, the last year of them. It had the very rare t-top option, and leather seats. It only had 18,000 miles on it and still smelled brand new. I won every car show I went to. Boy I miss those days…
I washed it today and man was it dirty!!! It took me 3 hours to wash it. I guess it could have been done quicker, but I wanted to do it gentle and slow so I didn’t "sand" the paint while I was washing it with all the dirt on top.
It turned out pretty good; it is going to need several coats of wax though. The paint is a bit dull. I polished a few parts on the car today as well, and while the sides look about new, the top body parts need some more work.
I will post some pictures in a bit of after the wash job...Oh, and I washed the engine as well. I didn’t do a perfect job on the engine. My intention was only do the paint today, I will "detail" the engine compartment a later day. Sunday I plan on polishing and waxing the entire car.. I can already feel my arms hurting now.

i never said it had to be MINT. i never said original. i said a nice low milage IROC. didnt search autotrader or ebay, just looked at craigslist for the past 2 days. i found one ALL ORIGINAL for 5800 and an IROC look-a-like for 5000. dont tell me theyre not out there, you just gotta look.

Thanks Keith. I cant wait to see the pictures of the car. Did you wind up leaving all the original markings on the windows? I wish the paint was perfect, but I guess that was little much to hope for from an 80's GM car. Any luck finding original rims yet? Their are some in Indianapolis that have been re-done, but they are the newer 2 stripe Iroc rims. Im trying to find some for you guys.

I finally got my daughter to bed; she didn’t want to sleep tonight for some reason. Yes, I left all the markings on the glass, I went over them light with the wash mitt, but that stuff doesn’t come off very easy to begin with. I have prepped new cars in the past, and you have to use a razor blade to get that stuff off, so the markings are untouched.
Yea, I was hoping the paint would be in better shape also, but it’s just sad that someone didn’t spend a few bucks to cover it up over the years. What a shame if you ask me. Could have been a perfect paint job it was waxed, and covered. No luck on rims yet, I have talked to many people, and sent a ton of emails, so I will just keep going until I find some. There has to be someone out there who has a set. Wait, I take that back, I do have a lead from someone in Canada who claims they might be able to get me a set of some new ones.. Hoping to hear back from him by the weekend. I will let you know what I find out. I am sorting through all the pics I took today, and will be posting them soon...

A lower mileage car should be at least somewhat mint unless it was neglected. A look-alike isn't an IROC. On the first link the $3000 into the engine and trans on a 59,000 mile car already has me suspecting fraud. Needless to say though, yes there are exceptions, but that kind of thing is definetly not the norm. I wouldn't be interested in a lower miler that wasnt mint and kept nice.....and you are usually paying for those.

I waxed a couple spots just to show you what the paint looks like. As you can see I waxed behind the drivers door and it came out really good. The top panels are going to need more work however. I think I am going to have to use the clay bar on them.
I am going to wax the entire car today, I will post some more pictures after I do. Until then, I am going to past a video in a little bit of a walk around of the car.
looks damn good. except for them 4X4's lol. you guys gonne try to buff it or just hand wax it?

Well, here is a video of a walkaround after I washed it. I am not going to buff the paint at all. I plan on using a clay bar, and then waxing, and polishing as many times as it takes to get the paint to look new again.
As you can see, I waxed half of the hood and a small part behind the drivers door. I just wanted to see what it would look like as I dident have the time to wax the whole car on saterday. Had to get home for other things....I hope to wax the whole car today...
Keith, just remember that the paint on the 1985 cars were not base coat/clear coat. You should be able to buff without any worries of paint delamination as you might remember from the early clear coated cars.
In regards to the chips, I would use a pointed toothpick to apply touch-up to the chip only. Try not to get any touch-up on the surrounding painted areas. After it dries, like 24 hours or more, lightly wetsand the area to level the surface. You can then buff the area and the chip will be gone. Good luck and the car is looking great.
i agree with scott. repair little things like that, it will help the cars value dramatically. dont paint the whole car obviously, but little repairs like that wont hurt anything.

Words cannot describe it.... WOW? Thats an amazing find in all auto history.
Keith, i have a question for you. How did you get the engine bay that clean? I'm sure you didn't take anything off to clean under it. BTW, where you waxed behind the drivers door looks REALLY good.
Yes, I agree, I am having so much fun being a part of this. I am not the owner, but I told the owner about the ebay auction, and have been involved in the payment, transportation of the car to us, and everything else. I don’t want or expect payment from the owner; I am just thrilled to be a part of it. I want to make sure the car gets preserved, and brought back to "new" original condition.
As I said before, I would also love to take this car to some car shows, preferably Camaro car shows. I want all of the Camaro enthusiast to get a chance to check it out, plus I am learning a lot about the Camaro history and meeting a lot of really nice people as well!
As far as the engine compartment, I just took Maguires car was soap, and a wash mitt and wiped everything down, and rinsed it off. It’s not a perfect job, but I will detail the engine compartment more through on a later day. I had not planned on doing the engine yesterday, but I thought I would give it a quick dusting off…
Here are some pictures of the Engine compartment after I washed it...
Ya know what’s amazing; all of the plastic under the hood, like the fan shroud, overflow tank, washer fluid tank and the fender wells, well the water is beading on it after I rinsed it with water. I didn’t use a high pressure hose because it might take some of the stickers with part numbers on it, but I can’t believe the water is beading on it after all of those years. Usually plastic gets a film on it and the water stops beading on the plastic after a few washes or so..
Well, I better go for now, have some things I need to do around the house, I still havent had a chance to wax the car today, I think I am going to do it after my daughter goes to bed...I will post some more pictures later if I do so...
Talk to ya guys soon!!

Hey, I heard that this car has two different sized rims on it. If that is true then do I get the same size tires on it? I believe it says on the build sheet 245/50VR16's.
I think I am going to order some Transwheels on Monday just to get some decent wheels on the car for the time being. I can then keep searching for some new old stock if anyone still has some. I am also going to get some tires on Monday as well.
What do you guys think of the Goodyear Eagle GT-HR's? Think they would be a decent tire for the time being??? The tred design is kinda close to the Gatorbacks...
Also, I am going to check and see if I can get some center caps new yet from the local chevy dealership. If not, I will have to look else where I guess.
Well, I am going to wax the camaro some more tonight, talk to you guys later...

Keith,
I have an '88 IROC that my wife and I purchased new in Lansing,Mi. August of '88.
The Camaros of the day (at least in 88) came with VR not ZR rated 245/50-16 Gatorbacks.
I still have my orginal tires My IROC has about 45K on it Those I can thake photos of for you and send if you would like but because they are the originals they are not for sale... I have however if it might be of intrest to the owner of the car have a set of Gatorbacks that I bought in '92 from Street Legal performance when they converted a bunch of Firebirds into Firehawks. They are about 60% tread left and are 245/50-16 ZR's I am open to a trade of new tires for these as they not my originals just that they are the ones that came on the GTA style wheels I bought in '92. They do not show any signs of dry rot. But the outer edge of the left front is worn more than the rest Again I can send photos of those also if you would like.
We don’t have any intention of driving it. To tell you the truth, I am really not sure what the owner is going to do with it, but I know he is not going to have anyone drive it. ok i dont want to sound rude or anything but why the heck did the owner buy if he aint going to take it to shows........is it just going to sit in a garage for another 20 years
and as for the miles you can take it on and off the trailer 1,000 times and move it around the lot and keep it under 100 miles
i do think i would drive it once in a blue moon just to get everything in motion....but thats just my .... i would say maybe 40 miles a year at that rate, and giving a few to load and unload it from a trailer, you could go 20 years and get 1,000 miles on the clock, so in 2029 have a 1,000 mile 44 year old car
you can put the camAro on top of rollers so that the odometer doesnt go up. you can pull the camAro around with it jacked up. when you get more pics of the camAro post them up. could you maybe put the camAro on a lift ad take pics of the undercarriage? i know the camAro was in a trailer, but id like to see if the camAro had any rust problems. any other cosmetic issues with the camAro??

The Iroc rims have "front" and "rear" stamped on them. Both have different offsets so they will only work in the right spots. All 4 got 245-50-16. Hope it helps.
In all honesty, I would like to see that car at a show with the junk yard wheels. It adds to the legacy in my opinion. It makes that car even more one of a kind.
Thanks for keeping us posted on the progress of the car.
