Tires? 1984 Z being painted black right now. What tires should I go with?

Stock alum rims in perfect shape.
I know I want white letters. The originals were Goodyear Eagle.
I like the Eagle II and the BFG's.
What say you guys?

Re: Tires? 1984 Z being painted black right now. What tires should I go with?

I just put some Firestone Firehawk Indy 500's on my '82 T/A. They were $366 installed w/ tax and include a $50 Home Depot gift car bringing them down to $316.

I have BFG Radial T/As on my '71 and '73 T/As and although they look great on the cars the tire design is starting to get really dated. They have been basically the same since the mid-1980s.

I have the BFG Radials on the front of my car as well. So far I haven't had a problem with them. I'd recommend them to anyone. And you can't beat the solid white letter look.

I'd go with the BFG's. They do look great on our cars. Yeah, they're dated and all, but if your just driving it around, can't go wrong really. I would gotten them, but didn't have enough for them, and couldn't afford to wait any longer. . . Had to settle for Uniroyal's . . .Wish I could of gotten the "Tiger Paw" w/ paw print in raised white though, but weren't available.

If you are talking about the tiger paw gts's those probably wouldn't be the greatest thing for your car. I have a set on my '92 4.3 S10 and it really has no probably spinning them. They ride nice but if you want to hook up I wouldn't suggest them.

Yeah, think those were the ones. I don't drive like a man posessed, the ol' RS is my daily driver. . .And thanks to previous owners, it been abused enough. . . Figured those GTS's would be enough to get by on, and yet still look nice. But if $$$ was on my side, I would of got the BFG's.

I would suggest a speed rating of no less than "H". The BFG's are not rated for that and are meant for touring only. If you want to get down in the corners and have some stick I'd suggest a "V" rated tire. Now hunting down a white lettered tire is whole nether game....they are too outdated for my liking and only belong on trucks and old school cruisers.

Re: Tires? 1984 Z being painted black right now. What tires should I go with?

So no votes for the Goodyears?
I am trying to make the car as original as I can. It only has 67k and interior is almost perfect.

I have the original window sticker and photos of the car. It had white outlined GoodYear Eagle Gt tires and it looked great. However, those tires (the Eagle II's) are even more exspensive than the BFGS!

Can you even get the original tires anywhere?

that speed rating is the speed at which corners can be taken safely without fear of the sidewall blowing out. The BFG's are rated from 112 to 118. I highly doubt with his all stock car will he be wanting to really be flying around corners half that fast.

I have Eagle GT IIs on my 1983 Z28. I like them a lot. I think you can only get them now in P235-60-15s. I really like the original Raised Outlined White Letter look.

Re: Tires? 1984 Z being painted black right now. What tires should I go with?

the goodyears look good but i'd prefer a solid white letter then an outline white letter tire. the old goodyear eagle st tire has been long discontinued. the bfg radial t/a tire is a tad dated but so are these cars. from what ive heard the bfg's are just for looks and not much performance.

Re: Tires? 1984 Z being painted black right now. What tires should I go with?

Just another note on how it came from the factory. In 1984 you would have gotten Eagle GTs with black side walls on an HO car. White Outlined Letters were for standard on LG4 Trans Ams and Z28s.

That looks nice brennan. My car is solid color (black) like yours and I think the white letters on the stock rims look cool.
If you had more avaliable to you what would you have gotten?

I found this site. It has a great calculator. It also calculates the max tire diameter which is very importaint to prevent brake failures at high speed. Assuming you still have stock brakes;

For white-lettered tires, and good solid ones for our cars, I like the Firestone Indy 500 Firehawks. That's what I have on mine.

i got the Tiger Paw GTS tires on my 83. they spin up real nice. I don't race so I don't need them to hook up solid. I like being able to spin them when i want to. They look great on my white/gold car.
