Description
Ok here is the ultimate trans am, this car is very rare in a number of ways, it is a 1992 pontiac trans am GTA they only made 508 GTA'S in 1992, none of which had t tops, this car was special ordered to have t tops, they were dealer installed, they are the original lexan tinted t tops that came stock on trans ams, these are not aftermarket tops, now for all you trans am specialists out there we all know that you could not get a 1992 GTA with t tops, unless it was a trans am with a 305, well this car is a true GTA Y84 car with a factory numbers matching 5.7 liter 350 v8, it is 100% a true Y84 GTA trans am, that makes this probably the only one on existance with t tops, and the only reason being that the original owner paid extra to get it that way since it was not offered, and i dont blame him, who wants a trans am without t tops, or worse yet a trans am with a 305 v8, not me!!! So now we know why and how it has t tops, as to more of why this car is rare, they only made 508 GTA'S in 1992, it was the last year of this body style, also this car is fully optioned with EVERY factory option for 1992 including the ultra rare for 1992 cd player, less than 300 left the factory with the cd player, also this car is the highly desireble black on black with leather which makes it even more rare. This trans am only has 65,000 original miles on it, how many are left with this low of miles? Car is all original with the exception of a very nice leather wrapped steering wheel , i do have the original factory wheel with the airbag, i changed it because i did not like the original big bulky wheel with the very ugly airbag, purchaser gets original wheel if desired. Also the car has been repainted once before i got the car, no accidents, original owner said his ex girlfreind keyed the car, it was a very high quality job done back in 2000 it still shines like a mirror {see pics} it is however nine years old and does have some normal light nicks here and there, nothing major at all, hardly noticable, but it is not perfect, i just want to let everyone know, overall very nice, could even go to a car show with no problems, interior on car is perfect with the exception of a small rip in the leather on top of the rear seat {see pics} the rest of the interior is perfect, no cracks in the dash, seats are excellent, very clean, everything works perfectly even the cd player still works flawlessly, sounds great. Motor and trans are perfect, lots of power, no smokes or taps, trans shifts nice and firm, a/c blows ice cold, lots of power!! This has been a garaged kept car, 1 owner before me, i am downsizing my collection due to space, i have had this car for over four years and have put less than 2,000 miles on it, it is a nice car, everything works great on the car, the original honeycomb wheels are spotless with newer BFgoodrich comp t/a tires, i have removed the factory lock lugs as you can see in the pictures, This is a highly collectable car, it would be almost immpossible to find a 1992 GTA black on black with leather with low mileage in this condition.. I am going to put it up at NO RESERVE so everyone knows they have a chance to purchase this vehicle. Do some research over the internet on these 92 GTA'S there are numerous websites with lots of information on these cars. I DO GUARANTEE BUYER THAT THIS IS A TRUE Y84 GTA WITH A NUMBERS MATCHING 5.7 LITER V8, ONE OF ONLY 508 MADE!!! WITH ONLY 65,000 ORIG MILES. I have a clean florida title in hand for purchaser, this has been a florida car all of its life and has no rust. CAR IS SET AT NO RESERVE SO HIGH BIDDER WINS. DO NOT BID WITH LESS THAN TEN POSITIVE FEEDBACK WITHOUT EMAILING ME FIRST!! OR I WILL CANCEL YOUR BIDS!!!! Rare? I guess you could say that. Real? Well yes in that its a GTA but not in the sense that the t-top was a option on the 5.7. In my mind it is not the same as the ASC/GM verts. They were lic by GM & a dealer option. If the owner had paperwork or the window sticker showing the factory did the work or the Pontiac dealer did the work then it would/may be a different story. In either case it does appear to be in nice shape & it is the last year for the GTA so that makes it a interesting and nice piece of Pontiac history.
I can't imagine a dealer taking on the job of what amounts to a full roof swap on a brand new car, as the ad claims. The car is beautiful though!

Current Drivetrain: LT1 and T56 with SLP 1 3/4" primary headers and catback: 8.85 seconds in 1/8 mile w/ lousy street tires.
I am not sure if that is what he is claiming or not... A whole roof swap would not be a huge deal, especially if you found one in a junkyard...
This is what I see...
1) Look at the closeup of the T-tops (see pic)
It appears to be the Factory style T-top, that is true. What gets me is the T-tops are not the 1992 style. Starting in mid 1991 GM changed the design of the T-top rubber and the rubber trim piece that is folded into the drivers window should not be rubber, they changed this to an ABS Plastic, SO they are not 1991-2 T-tops they appear to be off of something earlier.
I might be wrong, but that is what I see...
I read where he says it was a dealer installed thing, I wonder if they did the door jamb wedges...
Ultimately he clearly states that the tops were installed at the dealership... That does not make it rare by any standard, it means that it has been modified...
Has anyone considered that the repaint was due to the installation of the T-tops, it would be a great time to do a paintjob refresh... I know he claimes it was done initally when new, but who knows without paperwork, if he has it that is one thing, but from what I can tell it was converted somewhere between 1992 and when it was repainted...

okfoz, your probably right hat it was repainted at some point of it's time....one thing that strikes me is the sail panel emblems...they're way to low where they're normally mounted.
but man it sure has alot of surface scratches (blemishes) from that one photo...
still nice gta though...i always wanted a black one with ttops..and those early 90 models are growing on me more and more..
I think those are the plastic trim, the rubber even brand new would not be nearly as straight as those are. The front part is likely discolored/damaged/whatever. Beyond the first 3 or so inches, looks straight as an arrow to me and rubber trim was never like that.
To add to all of this, I seem to remember the Leather seats not all coming with leather door panels. I have seen a few 91-92 GTA's where the door inserts were actually Cloth. Or was that part of the leather appointment group that included the Leather Steering wheel, shifter, e-brake pull handle...
I just want to remember that not all the leather seated cars got the Leather door panels...

I would be interested in seeing what the sticker on the inside of the driver t-top says, and it does have a keylock on it....when did they start putting locks on them if ever?
The T-top Key Locks started in 1984 IIRC, mine use the original door key...
The decal states:
NOTICE:
To help avoid damage to acrylic roof panel, special care is required when panel is cleaned or removed and stored. See owners manual for additional information.
Printed in U.S.A.
(C) 1989 GM Corp.
WLC Part No. 10141490
EDIT It should be noted that the 1014190 part number is for the decal not the top.

Whats up with the steering wheel?Since its a 92 shouldnt it have an airbag?Doesnt look like it has one to me
Looks to be an aftermarket Grant steering wheel with the a GTA hood emblem glued onto the middle. That's definitely not the factory 91/92 grey vinyl airbag wheel.

Here is a pic of my 92 t-tops. While the strip is not as flexible as earlier years, it is not hard ABS plastic. Like most t-tops cars it looks like the window is not properly aligned with the tops letting them snag on that little strip eventually ruining them and causing a leak

I wonder if they did the door jamb wedges...
I wonder too. That is a minor detail missed but alot of chopped verts and t-top roof swaps and makes spotting a swapped door obvious
Quote:
sail panel emblems...they're way to low
Thats about where they are on my GTA
Quote:
...GTA hood emblem...
Its a nose emblem, they didnt get hood emblems
Something else noone has said is the visors, if you look in the pic they are strait, hardtop style. This would support a hardtop chop

All t-tops Ive owned have had locks
Heres a pic of my 92 t-top stickers
Also, did anyone notice that each wheel is missing a lug? Most likely the factory wheel locks
