Lots of new cars just put a plastic cover over it and call it an accessory plug. remember that it is always hot - so don't put anything metal into it - it might short it out.
since all cigarette lighters are the same diameter just find the cap from a gm car with the same color you have.
I have seen older Chevy/GMC trucks with cigarette lighter delete but never a 3rd-gen F-body.
You are correct. We had a brand new '75 Chevy pickup, base model, that had an ashtray -- but it came with a rubber plug where the lighter was supposed to be (no socket, wiring, or element).

Mine has a lighter. I don't think it was possible to order a thirdgen F-body without one.

I turned mine into a power point....took one out of a 4th gen and replaced the lighter element and socket with it, now I have a little cover that I can put in the socket to keep stuff from falling into it since I use the ashtray to keep change in.
My '89 1LE does not have a lighter, just a hole, and no ashtray. Not saying it came that way, that is just how it is now. Now I am curious, are there any other '89 1LE owners out there that can tell us if there is they have lighters/ashtrays or not?

In the good old days of Smokem & light them ahywhere days there was NO Cigarette lighter delete.
Only on some low end low option cars would not have them. Different times now in the NO Smoking era.

previous owner did it. all 3rd gen had an ashtray and a lighter. i have been thinking about replacing the lighter with a power outlet myself. i use the lighter socket for charging my cellphone and ipod more than anything. i have run across powered accessories in auto stores that will not run off a lighter but need an actual 12v power outlet. i had some trouble finding an electric air pump that will work with a lighter.
on a side note i have never understood the concept of the in car cigerratte lighter to begin with. everyone i have ever ridden with that smokes in their cars have never used em as a lighter is far more convienent and quicker to use. maybe in a convertable it might have a use but i cant remember ever seeing one actually used.

How can you say with absolutely no doubt without seeing the cars or having factory documentation that the 111 '89 1LE's built did or did not have a lighter/ashtray? Again, I am not saying whether they did or did not and it really dosen't matter to me, but unless other '89 1LE owners confirm whether their cars do or don't have them, it is not a fact. I'm not being a wise guy, just making a point.

there is no cigarette lighter or ashtray delete part in my 82-92 parts manual. if there is one i couldnt find it. it is possible i am missing a page or do not have all the GM updates to that catalogue. but in the roughly 8 inch thick catalogue i couldnt find a part that would be the blank shifter plate to cover the area where they go. it does list the parts that go into the 1le package if you look up pieces so i would assume it would have a delete shifter plate if there was one. again my catalogue may not be complete there is no real way to tell that for sure short of going to the local chevy dealer and asking them for a list of all shifter plates for 3rdgen f-body cars.

Mudskunk,
I think we are on the same page on this because the shifter plate on my 1LE is the same as any other Camaro, but the metal ashtray itself is gone. True, it could have been removed, but the lighter receptacle is not there either, just a hole. I really do not know is it came this way or not, that is why I was hoping from some input from other '89 1LE owners. The car I have was SSGT raced for the first 5 years of its life, so they could have very well have been removed, but the weight savings from those parts would seem minimal and there are no other alterations to the interior or any other parts removed.

sorry clicked the wrong one was supposed to quote this
You dont need pics for that... You find a 4th gen, or any car with a "power outlet" that has a cover, and you swap that in place of your stock ligher socket. It basically just gives you a tethered cover to go over the socket, and a nice newer socket. You should grab the plug for the back also so you can wire it in and have it plug and play. Many SUVs have power outlets like this. 97+ Jeep cherokees have a nice cover that says "POWER OUTLET" on them.
Yuppers... easy as that. One ground, one hot. The hot is usually orange...I think. Pretty sure our cig lighter circuits were hot with the key out. If you get the 4th gen one, or one from a newer car, it'll likely have a nifty plug on the back vs. having two separate wires. Makes it a little cleaner and nicer. Plus you dont have to worry about the two wires touching and ZAP.
They do... However they always look generic. I think Ive seen one that has "Power Outlet" written on the cover, but it looked kinda funky. Plus, you have to do the two separate wire hook up.
Def not a bad option, dont get me wrong. But you can get some asthetic, OEM ones for a couple bucks too. Choice is yours!
I will say... One of the things I liked most about my 4th gen console, besides those WONDERFUL cup holders, was the two outlets. One for the lighter, which is switched 12v, and the other infront of the ebrake handle, which was constant. Nice to have a couple to use.
