Chevy vs Ford. old vs new

This comes from the march 1992 MuscleCar review. I think the IROC would have won it all if they had used a G92.

Re: Chevy vs Ford. old vs new

This test is entertaining (thanks again mr396), but like most articles, it is suspect in a lot of ways and contains inaccuracies.

First, why did they select automatics for the new cars, when the old cars were equipped with manuals? What a handicap. It is well known in 5.0 Mustang circles that equipping a Fox-body with a stock AOD adds nearly a second to its quarter-mile time versus a 5-speed.

Second, as mr396 pointed out, why not use better version of the Camaro -- either a G92/5-speed version or an L98? Why complain about the braking when the test car didn't even have rear disc brakes? Is 3.08 the correct gear ratio for a 305/auto Z28? Wouldn't it be a 2.73?

Finally, 15" wheels are not correct for a '91 Mustang, despite what the article says. Those 10-hole wheels were last used on the 5.0 in 1990. In 1991 the Mustang upgraded to 16" wheels and tires. And 3.08 is the gear ratio for a 5-speed Mustang, not an automatic (with auto it would be either a 2.73 or a 3.27).

While I agree with some of their conclusions, articles like this add to the misinformation that's out there about our cars. I think the MCR folks should stick to writing about 1960s cars...

Re: Chevy vs Ford. old vs new

I agree, they should have used manuals and done more than 2 runs each, just to ake sure they got the best possible numbers for each car. I think they used auto's though just for the sake of equality as it seemed they were more comparing the 91's aginst each other more than the old z and boss.

and again, i think they didn't use the G92 or l98 because they were comparing base 5.0 with base 5.0

Re: Chevy vs Ford. old vs new

They can use base 5.0 to base 5.0 and be closer across the board. The gears in a 69 Z28 would be 3.73 or 4.10s and would have had manual only. They could've gotten a 1991 Z28 with the 5.0, 3.42 gears and manual and it would've been closer to the 69 in configuration. The same goes for the Mustang. As was said, give the 91 a 5 speed and the correct 16" wheels, the numbers would be more realistic of what they can do. The 91 Z would've have ben a top performer with much better numbers.

Re: Chevy vs Ford. old vs new

Interesting. Thanks for posting it up again. I found it amusing that even though both camaros did slightly worse than both mustangs, that the driver preferred the feel of the camaros to the mustangs. Slight chevy bias maybe...

Re: Chevy vs Ford. old vs new

I just noticed they pitted a 69 Z/28 with the 4-speed and 3.73 gears and the 70 boss with 4-speed and 4.11's, pretty much the top of the line. The 91 Z28 had a A4 and 3.08 gears. To me that just makes the 91 Z28 more impressive.
