I recently purchased a 1991 camaro without a motor in it but it has the 5 speed still in it. The RPO codes tell me it came with a L03. But on the outside it is badged as a RS but the inside has a Z28 badge on the dash. This is where it gets confusing to me. The car seems to have a wider ten bolt(sticks out even with the fender) and a posi. But it has the 1LE PBR aluminum calipers and 12" rotors. So i dont think that it is a 4th gen rear. And the RPO code isnt a 1FP87 like a rs coup and a z28 should be. The odd code is 1FP23. It also has glass ttops. Any help would me much appreciated. Thanks. And sorry ahead of time if this is a stupid question.

dont post vin numbers. as far as the rear end question, i do believe you answered your own post. if the rear end assembly is Wider and sporting pbr calipers, it seems that you have a 4th gen rear end bolted up there. technically the rotor diameter is 11.6 or so.

The LO3 engine would designate it as an RS I believe. The wider rear would have to be 4th gen. The interior badge was added on. The glass T-tops are an add-on as well, as a 1991 car would have had factory Lexan plastic tops - which crackled really bad from sunlight, so it's a safe assumption the PO replaced them with glass (as alot of us have done).
I'd like to see the VIN. You may post it with the first 11 digits, just leave off the last set of sequence numbers.
Does the SPID's (the decal with the RPO codes) VIN number match the one on the car at the base of the windshield? It must, or the SPID is useless.
The VIN issue really relates to rare or special cars. I'm a believer that the criminal mind will do what they want and will find the details they need to commit their crime. At a car show, all VINs are visible as are license plates. Hiding these on the web won't protect you or your investment. The reason for hiding these was to prevent a criminal from stealing your cars identity and selling a clone. This has happened on the Hemi Cuda's and other rare cars of the 60s and 70s. I don't believe we have very many cars that fall into that category. Is it possible? yes, will it happen? who knows.

It sounds to me that you have an RS... There was no LO3 engine option for the Z28 from 90-92. The Axel as mentioned before would be a 4th Gen, as they are slightly wider for different offset wheels (more like a FWD car). The Glass T-tops are not uncommon for 89-91 cars. I was not aware that the Plastic tops were used on all cars...
The 4th gen brakes is kind a neat thing, for an FYI, if you bought the calipers from a junkyard from a 4th gen, then find the 89-92 style backing plate and rotor (which is available OTC at most auto places) and mount them on any 4 wheel disk brake car (keep in mind that the 9 bolt and the 10 bolts had different backing plates...)
