What would you feel comfortable paying for this car.

I am looking at a '92 Z28. Its an L98 G92 Car.

Originally it was the teal color, I forget what it is called. Now it is black. The paint looks nice and is two years old. there are some spots near the door hinges and under the hood where you can see the original color. When the car is closed up it looks GREAT.

The Goods:

Subframe Connectors
10k miles on new stock engine
about 2k miles on new tranny and rear with 3.73's installed
New suspension components
Nice B&M ratchet shifter
Brand new tires
4th gen power (working) seats (although pass. side is ripped a little)
A/C works great
All power options work great
Hatch pull down works
Has RPO sticker, all options verified

The Bad:

Has about 320K miles on it (although drivetrain and suspension are new)
Has an R title (Insurance company totalled it after minor accident 5 years ago, wanted to keep it and fix it. I see no signs of carnage, it was fixed right)

What would you feel comfortable paying for it. It is a very nice '92 Z.

Re: What would you feel comfortable paying for this car.

I don't know, what is he asking. 320K miles on a car is lot, even with replaced parts unless it has been FULLY restored replacing EVERYTHING at one point...something has 320K on it if you know what I mean...including the body/chassis. Not to mention it was wrecked somewhere along the line too with the salvage title/Carfax. I would say not a whole lot as the mileage and being wrecked/totaled hurt the value...no matter what they have done since or how well it has been done, it will just never be worth what a lower mileage not totaled car would be...which are still around, so it's not like they are so rare you need to buy one like this. Just keep that in mind when negotiating a price. If he is selling and has too high a price it has some sort of personal value and you can't expect to get that from the market. A stranger doesn't care about the sentimental value the car has to you...only what it is worth unfortunately. If he needs to sell it, he will realize a realistic price and settle/deal...otherwise he will keep it as he values it too high. I guess if I had to put a number on it, a few grand would be my number tops. Good paint would be fine, but it has been color changed and without getting all the areas so you can still see the old color in spots. That's a strike to me. Newer driveline and such, but on a 320K mile car...another strike. If it is cheap enough, yea go for it, but I have a feeling it is kind of pricey based on your asking what number would be comfortable to pay.

Re: What would you feel comfortable paying for this car.

If the drivetrain and suspension are new and a decent amount of new interior parts, the high miles seems negligible. I think at that point, any problems to expect would be based on pure age, not mileage. Most likely a car with those miles has been more highway driven anyway.

The salvage title is probably a resale value killer if you ever wanted to sell it down the road.

If you want the car and want to keep it, just pay what you think is fair to you since it's monetary value isn't important. If you think you may sell it in a few years, the salvage title may cause you issues as most people really wont trust your word about how extensive the damage was in the accident. In that case, I wouldnt pay more than a couple (2) grand for it.
