what is an F-41 Camaro?

A kid at school wants to trade me his 84 "F-41" Camaro for my freshly wrecked 84 Trans Am. His car has a 305, 700-R4, no AC, no power options, has Glass T-tops, and the odd part: it seems to have the deluxe interior. It has a royal blu einterior with the seat fabric that says Camaro on it. It also has the carpeted trunk panels. The car looks like a Sport Coupe, but it does have an "F-41" decal on the back bumper. The rear end has 3.23's and a posi. Is this a real option package or just a figment of his imagination?

F41 is just a Heavy duty (or sport type) suspension option. It's not rare or paticulary good.

F41 suspension was a far cry better than the S/C and Berlinetta suspension, but it fell rather short, pretty much stumbled, compared to the Z28 suspension of the same years ... (which isn't saying much compared to the 85+ suspension... A LA IROC)

F41 uses the same suspension pieces as the FE2 cars except the front springs and swaybar.

My 91 RS had the F41 suspension and it handled very well. My car had the 16inch aluminum wheels too.

When rebuilding the front suspensin my RS had the 32 or 33mm ( I can't remember now) front sway bar, which was the same size my friends WS6 suspension Firebird had. There was a smaller sway bar offered on V8 cars. As to the springs, I had a dealer look up replacment springs for my RS, the dealer said the F41's were available anymore but a slightly stiffer spring was, so I got those.

I think the downfall of the F41 suspension was the GoodYear GA tires instead of the Gatorbacks the WS6 Formula had more than anything else.

Heres the suspension break down for FE1, F41, and FE2/WS6.

Front suspension on:
FE1 has a 30mm sway bar
F41 has a 34mm sway bar
FE2 has a 36mm sway bar

Rear suspension on:
FE1 has a 18mm sway bar
F41 has a 23mm sway bar
FE2 has a 23 or 24mm sway bar

WS6/FE2 and F41 both share the 12.7:1 steering gear
FE1 has the 14.0:1 steering gear.

WS6 is FE2 Most WS6 Firebirds have both WS6 and FE2. WS6 was just the merchandising name for a performance option package.

So you can see FE2 and F41 are pretty close, but definitely don't have the same front sway bar. Also FE2 has stiffer front springs.
So technically if you wanted to point out F41's short comings it'd be that the front suspension came up short.

Its interesting in posting this I realised I have two releases from GM one shows 24mm rear sway bar for FE2, the other shows 23mm. The newer of the two suggests they share the same sway bar.

So is the F41 suspension basically the same suspension that came standard on 82-87 z28's.

I found my measurement it was 33.8 mm for the front sway bar, which is right in there with what Drew says. I think the new springs were FE2's.

Thanks
