Well today was suppose to be the day that my z28 went in for the recall on the seatbelts, lets just say i did not let them do it, I decided against the recall right now because they want to replace only 3 of my belts, now normally that would not bug me, but they are a different colour. Maybe i am being stupid here, but i know i would not buy a new car with 2 different colours of seat belts, hell i probably would not buy a used car like that. They also say that they only have to replace one of the back belts, not two. Hold on how can one belt be good and the other bad, how can they tell. Maybe up here in canada its different.
i just got off the phone with gm complaint line, apparently they say that having a car that looks like a junker is a good thing, it is all about safety, not how something looks, but they could still not tell me why one of the back seatbelts is considered good, and the other not. Also they could not tell me which one is structually safer. Well i will say this will be the last gm product i will own, obviously they dont give a rats a$$ about customer satisfaction, or even guarantee that the fourth seatbelt will be safe. Oh yeah i priced a new seatbelt buckle, they will let me have it for 118 bucks, how nice of them.

hmmm i wonder if i should get a toyota, or a nissan truck to do up next?

With what we've seen with our last new Chevy, it's no better with a new vehicle under warranty either. They may win the battle but they're sure losing the war with this service BS.

i went to the dealer to day and talked to a buddy of mine, i gave him the vin # and it came back that it was not done so he sent me to the leder of his teem out front and he order the parts no problems


maby it was just my in side guy i dont know but at least i dont have to look at those red/white buttons any more

I got a complete set of 4th gen seat belts from eBay for $35 shipped. Great condition. The female buckles bolted right in. I still have to put in the male belts.

update, after calling and complaining to gm canada, and after sending them an email as well they have come through for me, the first dealer i went to would not do anything to help me out, so the customer service line sent me to another dealer(this one is only about 2 km down the road) . The second dealer looked at my seat belts and said that all 4 should be replaced(under the recall). The parts have been ordered and should be in shortly.

its usually the dealers that are the a$$holes, they have to spend money to fix ur 20 yr old car and they cant bill you for it

What gets me is my seatbelts have obviously not been changed HOWEVER, according to my local dealers computer Pointiac has no knowledge of a recall for my car.

What I really am finding interesting is the fact that Pontiac has no way to give you an RPO code sheet before 1990, because of their poor record keeping practices. Pre 1990 cars are also the BULK of the cars that are involved in the recall... I see a pattern and I smell planed lack of information.

Has anyone with a Firebird actually had the recall done recently? or is it all been Camaros?

thats what I want to know.

Ordered the parts myself because I questioned two local dealers and these knotheads all looked at me like I was crazy. "WE would have to see the vehicle,sir" BS, here is the VIN. Order parts and I'll bring car in. F them I would rather not have them crawling around in there scratching things up or tearing something else up that you find about 20 minutes down the road from the dealer. I realize it is the point of the thing. However for 20.00 it was worth it to me to know it was done right and nothing else got screwed up in the process.

Mine were red like the originals, however someone here mentioned black ones are now what they use, I would rather have the black ones myself.

Well, I bought mine a few years ago and even though there was a recall I wasnt in the mood to argue, so I got the parts at a deal and installed myself not to long ago. Even though the old ones were working fine they were nasty and dingy and the red buttons were faded so I just did it all. Less grief.

Okay I know that 1. GM records the VIN's of cars that have had recalls workd on and 2. there's a sticker. But first, where's the sticker at? I know for sure that my seatbelts haven't been worked on (NO recalls have been worked on. I'm the second owner of my car and the first owner told me straight up he didn't care enough to do anything about any of it.) and such but I tried to take it in and they told me it had probly already been done, yadda yadda, blah blah. I'm going to try again cuz it really irratates me. I know somebody who works at a local TV station as a reporter so hopefully me just happening to mention that will be enough leverage. What I plan on is just taking my car in and having them work on ALL recalls for this model (as there are quite a few, several of which are rearing their ugly heads) and just getting it all over with. My parking brake recently went kerplooey (which was recalled) and the buckle on the driver side actually had to be ripped open to get the belt out at one time so it's just hanging open and I have no safety restraint. Makes me kinda nervous you know? But is there a comprehensive list of all recalls for this vehicle (with numbers) anywhere I can get my hands on?

www.alldata.com has the recall info for about any car. Will also have TSB titles, but no text, for the dealer repair insider tips. The TSB deal is not a recall and just helps the service guys fix stuff better the first time.

does the deal have the car info on whether the recall was done or not? my gas tank seems to leak when full. there was a recall on a gas line problem.

Seat Belt Recall on my 87 IROC

I purchased an 87 IROC off of E-Bay from Canada last year. Went to import it back into the states and found out I couldn't until the seat belt recall had been completed. The guy simply ran my VIN # at the dealership. The seller took the car to a Canadian dealership the next day and had the parts ordered. The seat belt recall was completed a day or two later and I had the recall paperwork faxed to the US department in charge of making sure the car met all US safety standards (country of origin was the US).

I just got mine done at my local dealer. My friends the service tech there so he set it all up, but had trouble getting the recall into the computer. Guess GM changed the numbing system for recalls and because this ones so old it never got changed. After a day of phone calls he got it straightened out and I now have 4 new belt buckles. Sure work better then my old ones :9:

seatbelt recall

Spent quite a while with my dealer and GM this afternoon. Of course it all ran the same course as the previous postings above. After much arguing the woman at GM was able to find the research the new recall number after insisting that my car was not on the recall campaign list. I told her to google the term "camaro seatbelt recall" and she could follow along like everyone else has. She finally was able to determine the new GM recall number is 90C22.

The actual PDF document of the original recall (all 110 pages) is available at NHTSA's website: http://www-odi.nhtsa.dot.gov/cars/problems/recalls/
Just search for Camaro/Firebird recalls and your year. The Adobe PDF file has a seperate link that can be accessed by clicking on "document search". It lists the original recall document and all of the part numbers.

The recall number has been changed by GM to 90C22. (The NHTSA version is 90V105000.) If the dealer searches this number they should get the info for you. Though my dealer at the moment is trying to call the zone rep to see if they will do it at on their dime (I cant imagine them declining it based on the safety/recall issue but I'll give them a day or two to come to the right decision)

Good news is that the dealer is covering the recall. Bad news is that only 3 of the four belts are available in grey. The passenger front belt cant be found in grey or black. So it looks like I'll have a tan passenger side belt for the moment and maybe dye it later.

Yup, It's a 1987 L98 IROC that had until recently been parked in my neighbors yard down the street. After driving by it for years, I finally stooped and asked if he was interested in selling. He said that was a weird concidence since he had just written up a flyer to hang in the autoparts store to sell it. Nice Timing! It's a local car since new, one of the last to leave the Norwood plant in Mid August of 1987. Mostly orginal paint. All original drivetrain etc. Here's some photos:

Is this recall still in effect?? how do i know if my car has been done, what exactly was this recall about, i have read the posts, but i dont really understand them!

It may depend on when the recal was done. One of my cars there is a metal clip that was placed on the reciever. Other recalls I have seen seem to simply replace the reciever altogether. It should still be valid on your chevy. Unfortunately Pontac has no record of it.

I find this Very Very odd, three days ago i was headed to school, and my seat belt wouldnt latch into the buckle piece.. Something inside is broke.. So I guess, i oughta call up the dealer that installed my new tranny...

This is With my 1988 Camaro..

The 1983 is now my drag car.. and the seat belt in that doesnt retract.. From the top nor the bottom.. but thats getting ripped out anyway..

i am new to this site. i just registered moments before posting this. but i have had problems with the seatbelts in my 86. the spring in the clip on the passenger side broke and it doesn't even work anymore and sometimes i can't get the one on the driver side to completely stay down. what should i do to get the replacement kit? should i go to a dealership or would i be better of just going to a junkyard?

well First, welcome to the site.. Im sort of new.. I dont post very much..

A recall is valid for ever.. I believe, so you should be able to go to a Chevrolet Dealership and talk to them, and they should replace it for free.. They cant charge you for a recall.. If you go to a Junk yard... I wouldnt doubt it, but you'd probably end up in the same situation.. I forgot today, so tomarrow i will call up my dealership, and talk to them.. and see what they can do. and i'll most likely tell ya what they say..

And you mentioned a replacement kit... You dont have to get anything.. they either have it out back, or they order a new one..

Wow. I missed this thread long back.

Reading what a few of you guys have been through, I am sad to say I will resort myself to pay the $140 they ask of me for EACH!!!! seatbelt. . .THATS WITH SEAT BELT BUCKLES NOT INCLUDED!!!!

Ahh the glory of owning a classic, poor engineering. . .

Nice to know I'm not alone..
I have copies of inter office memo's recall bulletins,etc and according to GM Canada..there are no open recalls on my car. But like most here..I know it hasn't been done. I have been fighting this for over 2 years on and off. The service and parts managers at the local dealership are both friends of mine and they have told me the same thing..if it's over 10 years I'm SOL.
The biggest issue with mine is..my 86 came from Florida originally..so according to GM Canada..it isn't in their system. So they told me to call GM in the US...and the run around began...
I bought one belt a couple of years ago..the part number in the bulletin changed up a couple of times and I managed to get a back seat one...should have bought them all I guess.

So..do 4 gen seat belts fit 3rd gen's?

njsteve, thanks for the recall #s!

When I had mine done back in '94, they just replaced the seatbelt buttons (and I've got the shiny metal clip on the outside). Interesting to see that they're replacing the whole receiver belts now.

I just found this on that NHTSA site...and I'm pretty sure none of the other recalls have been honored either. This one bugs me because it happens every time I cruise around with the T-Tops off...my seat belt doesn't retract properly and I have all kinds of slack in it that I have to manually try to get the tensioner to retract.

Talk about reviving an old thread...Last post was on my birthday, more than 2 years ago!

Anyways, from what I read on the NHTSA site, recalls don't go past 10 years.

Anybody got anything, printable, that shows otherwise?

Well just to update, The recall # that GM is now using for my 91 Z is 91C11 and it calls for a GM dealer to inspect the belts and if any problems exist they will replace them. I talked with Ryan at Chevy and he said that if I have a strong opinion that the belts need to be replaced they will but that I must voice strong feelings that they are not ok. So just when I thought this was over I am up to my neck again. I am going to the dealer tommorow and we will see what happens.

recall for 91 is #91023 got this from GM, the dealer had to go back and dig out the OLD books to find it but it was there, I called the 1-800-222-1020 and followed the steps to the warranty/recall department and they set me up. I would call GM first.
Also the button kits are still available part # 14097930.
I was in the dealer yesterday and they ordered the parts and they are in stock at GM three of them were at the local warehouse and plenty of them at the Pontiac MI warehouse. The GM recall # is 91023 but their referance # can fall under the 90C22(c) was very confusing for even the experianced service and parts managers, the book they found it in was about the size of New York phone book. I am a retired GM employee and have worked with this dealer for years so I had a little inside help but with some push and the right info you can "get r done"

On my shoulder belts the retractors dont work all that well and they wont lock when you pull them real fast ( So I'm thinking they serve no purpose) does this mean GM will replace them for free??

Wow! I can't believe all the rough times everyones been having with getting the seatbelt buckle recall done (I don't know about the whole belt thing).
Some have also had trouble getting RPO's from the dealer.
I had great luck at the GM dealer with . . .
- the belt buckles. I just walked in and asked (in 2000 which made my car 11 years old then) and asked, "any recalls?". They said 2 hadn't been done, my buckles and my convertible's front roof clamps. They had the parts in 2 days and the work was done in one afternoon! Here's a copy of my receipt with the campaign (recall) numbers . . .

A few years later I asked them if they had my RPO codes and they said, "Yep, here you go". And I got them in about 2 seconds for free. Here's the very copies that cames out of the dealer's printer . . .


As far as I remember, They said that because these 2 campaigns are critical safety related recalls, there is now expirery date on them. At least not for me.

In most cases it is not the dealer it is a lack of information supplied by General Motors. I am a Pontiac dealer. I bought the dealership almost 2 years ago. My 89 Turbo Trans Am has 22,000 miles on it. A garage queen. I have severly faded buttons in my seatbelts. Beige belts have been discontinued so I've been having a very hard time with my own car. Does anyone have a part number to replace just the buttons? Even if my car doesn't fit into the recall, I'd gladly pay for the parts if I could just find them.

According to the gov. website the campaign number for my car is 90V105000. But even as a GM dealer that doen't tell me what parts I get. Had I been a dealer when these cars were new maybe I'd have more info but as every other dealer has told you it really is hard to find info on our cars once they are over 10 years old.

All I really want to replace are the buttons. I'd replace the whole assembly if I could but GM (and so far I haven't found aftermarket) doesn't offer tan. According to our service manuals the seat belts are non-service. You don't take them apart for any reason just replace if broken. So replacing buttons contradicts our GM supplied information.

Order 14097930, it's a complete kit for 4 seat belt receivers includes the red plastic push button, springs and also a metal shield supposed to be used on receivers manufactured before Jan 1989 or so. This is the kit the dealers used to repair any broken / brittle push buttons as outlined in the TSB. Used to be about six bucks, probably twenty or so now, but you should be able to get it under the recall with your connections.

I check our computer today to see if that # would work. Our microcat parts imaging system wouldn't pick it up but I ran the number through GM dealerworld. According to that system they are around $5 and they have 566 left in stock . However I have looked up my build date and my car was produced on 5/1989 . Would that part # still work? Is there a different # I can use? Thanks a bunch for your help!

Are you planning on using 1 set on your 89 formula? Was your 89 produced before or after Jan 89? Let me know what you find out when you get them!

O-yeah, does anybody have any diagrams or info on disassembly? Our GM service manuals say replace as necessary with no helpful info.

Well, I have the 90c22 bulletin on the computer on an old GM disk, but I can't copy and paste from the program. Check back later tonight and I'll print it out and scan it, then post it. Probably not a good way to put it on the BBS but it's the best I can do I think. Maybe I can scan as text and make it work. But the bulletin covers thru 1990 and serial numbers thru 134987 California cars.
