Seat Question

So this winter I'm going to be taking out my interior and completely cleaning it and cleaning the carpet and that. Right now the seats I have are really crappy, uncomfortable, and have no lumbar support (whenever i go fast around corners I feel like im gonna slide right into my door or onto the passenger). I went searching for 4th gen seats at local wreckers and whatnot but 4th gens are tough to come by around here. My questions is: What seats could i get that have good lumbar support and are comfortable that are'nt over 400$? even just front seats for now 'caue the rear seats are probably going to stay out of the car. Any help would be great!

You know, as much as i would love to do that, it would probably be too hard. My beater car (Civic si) has black seats that have a crazy amount of support and are really comfortable. Problem is is that the track bolts to the floor completely different then a third gen. If I were to somehow make the seats work, I would have to somehow get the tracks of a third gen onto the civic seat which looks really tough. My civic seats were actually my first thought but after looking at them side by side, it would way too much work.

Re: Seat Question

What I do on them is make my own frame out of 1" square tubing,it mount's to the floor in the stock bolt hole's and then bolt the other seat's to the frame. And with the frame it set's the seat's up closer to the same height as your stock seat's.

Re: Seat Question

sounds like you're looking for a bolt-in replacement. I believe that cavalier/sunfire seats match up to f-body tracks. They should be plentiful and cheap in local yards

huh, was actually looking around in old threads and supposedly some Trans Am seats came in late 80's Grand Am GT's, which is perfect 'cause theres a rediculous amount of Grand Am's in the JY near me. Ill try to find those first and then start looking at sunfire seats and that.

Found an old pic of someone showing the compatabilitty(Can't spell that word) of stuff

Re: Seat Question

I don't know anything about Grand Ams, so I can't say those seats aren't from one. But I always see A LOT of Grand Ams and Grand Prixs in junkyards, and I've never seen those seats in any.

Those are "GTA" seats. I suppose GM could've used them in other cars besides GTAs and TAs, but if they did, I'm not aware of it.

But good luck finding a set of those, too. They'll be as uncommon as 4thgen seats.

Several people on these boards have successfully and easily installed Fiero seats in thirdgens. They're supposed to be very comfortable and supportive, too. And they're fairly easy to find in junkyards.

Re: Seat Question

Actually I went to the JY today and found grey seats exactly like what I have right now but in execellent condition and are nice and comfortable In a Grand AM. Problem is, went to the next JY and found a 89 Camaro RS with a complete black interior. front seats and headliner were shot but the rest of the interior was MINT! Got two buddys to come down and got the interior out in an hour. All it cost was 60bux, carpet and plastic trim and everything! I'm really happy that I got the interior but when walking to my car, I realized that I payed 20 bux an hour and a half ago for grey seats that'll now be in a black interior lol. So now I'm going back tommorow to find black seats that'll go in the car.

Re: Seat Question

Okay I have been doing the seat thing all summer. In my son's 95 Grand Prix we swapped out cloth for leather power ($60.00) and although it was an improvement (power seats are always a lumbar and comfort improvement) I don't know if they are an improvement over leather 3rd gen seats. To the eye they look like they would fit in our third gens but I did not try. The Grand Prix seats are plentiful and leather is easy to find. the day we pulled his there were two full sets in dark gray and a nice black leather and a nice cloth set. They appear to be very "thick" or plush.

In my 92 I am having my grey power leather seats recovered (should be ready this week) and am having it drivers lumbar and side bolster improved to fit my back. We took foam from a donor seat and added it to exsisting foam. It should make a big improvement on my aching back...lol.

My 86 has some mint stock non power seats that I temporaly installed in the '92 and man what a bummer. It was like going to the poor house. You never know what you miss until you don't have it anymore. Adjustments are nil and the height can't be adjusted like with power seats not to mention back adjustment suck.

I would suggest recovering whatever seats you decide to go with and improving the lumbar at the same time to get the desired comfort. And in my opinion a power drivers seat is a must. I will be looking for a power for my '86 as soon as the 92 custom leather is complete.

I have heard that the GTA seats are the best of the thirdgen but because I am not a 'bird guy I have never tried them. I just know anything is better than stock and the premier cars...GTA...IROC...Z28 had better seats than your basic third gen.

4th gen balck is hard to find and you will pay the same as recovering and customizing 3rd gen seats.
