I want to put these in a mint 9k mile 89 GTA. Will the holes I must make line up with the holes from the spring loaded flap pouch thing ? I mean I can't have any extra hole showing on this nice of a car. Thx in advance and yes I searched but this little tidbit was not easily located.

There will be extra holes left showing because the pouch attaches directly to the inside door trim panel with several pal nuts, IIRC. The plastic cup holder screws right to the door with three screws.

I knew they mounted differently. I never would have thought they mounted only to the door panel.

Are we all sure that extra holes will show ?

If the lower door panel is vinyl, then yes, most definitely. The "fluff" of carpeting may help hide them.

It's vinyl. Damn that sucks. I really wanted to add these and no one would have known they didn't belong there. Thx anyway

Won't fit. My buddy has one he was gonna give me (the cup holder) and I test fitted it on my 87 GTA. The portion of the door panel is not flat, but "sloped/contoured", preventing the cup holder from fitting.

You'd hafta switch to the flatter door panels, if that's what you already have. My guess is that you have the "sloped/contoured" paels, if you have the pockets.

And not ALL GTAs got the pockets. They weren't a standard option, on GTAs.

Yes they are sloped. In your test fit did you see any way to modify the cup holder as in grinding a radius in it to match the door panel.

I cannot see going to a different panel because I would never find ones as nice as the ones I have.

With some cutting & grinding, it looked like it woulda fit. But I didn't look into HOW MUCH would be needed, if if they were even deep enough to fit over the slope, after the cutting. Or if that whole pocket section would hafta cut off completely.

Thx. Could some others who have seen these comment. I'd even consider cutting and putting a radius at the back end to make them fit. Others have said the old holes would show anyway ?

Oh, I forgot about the sloped deluxe panels. I assumed you had the basic flat door panels. How are the pockets attached? The same way as the standard panels?

Im going to be adding a set of the 91-92 style cup holders to my set of molded gta panels in a few days, have to get everything cleaned up first.

Even though the sides have a slope on the way up to the armrest, the rear end of the cupholder (junk trough) is set out enough that it clears the slope. From everything I can tell by just laying the cup holder on top of the door panel, it looks like its gonna mount just fine. The door panel seems to be flat everywhere that the cup holder actually touches it.

Since Im gonna be recovering the gray fabric part with new material, the extra pocket holes will get covered over and not be an issue. If you dont recover the fabric part, you will have 4 visible screw holes, 3 along the top and one in front. None of the original holes will be used for the cup holder, 3 new holes will be required.

For now here is a pic to kinda see how it would look, this is with the holder just setting on top. It would set better with the pocket off, but Im still having hell getting those nuts off without a proper tool. As you can see, the trough area behind the cup holder will stick out enough to clear the slope of the door panel, but it will make getting your hand into the trough to dig out change or something a little tighter towards the rear.

This placement is right where it needs to be for the screw holes in the cup holder to hit the factory mounting holes in the door itself. It cant be moved forward any more or their wont be a place to attach the top screw, since the door in that area is cut out for the window motor. I may fabricate a bracket across the window motor hole to put a screw into and move the cup holder forward a few inches if it doesnt look right once I get the pocket off and test fit it again.

I can't wait to see how you pull this off & look decent.

I thought about it at one time, but didn't see a CLEAN way to pull it off, short of a lot of cutting & recovering to hide the cuts.

I managed to fabricate a tool to remove those backwards nuts holding the pockets on, so I got some better pics of the cup holder in place.

The top one shows the cup holder moved all the way forward, which would require adding some brackets on the door for the screws to go into.

The bottom pic is how it would look using the factory screw holes on the door.

All of the light gray fabric is being replaced with a multi shade gray digital pattern. Im probably gonna make some mounting brackets and go with it moved all the way forward unless it looks like its gonna be too much trouble. Main problem I see right now is that the gray paint on the cup holders doesnt properly match the gray vinyl on the door panels, something will have to be done about that. I might paint them dark gray to match the door handle trim, but that will possibly make them stand out too much.
