steering column repair - housing support replacement

for all the experienced column repair folks out there...

The column in my 91 has been "loose" in that you could pull the steering wheel down (at about the 7 o'clock position) an inch and it would "spring" back up, so I tore it down.

It turns out that one of the pivot pins has "wallowed out" the hole in the housing support So, instead of being a tight fit, the pivot pin is just loose in there and allows the housing to sort of move around on the housing support.

Anyone know of a GM part number to get a new housing support?

For clarification, I'm referring to the chunk of cast aluminum that the inner half of the pivot pins push into, and is also the same piece that the 4 infamous bolts loosen up on.

if no part number, anyone know how common (or perhaps specific to a vats column) the piece might be in a boneyard? or any repair techniques - perhaps a competent machinist could drill the hole oversize and put some kind of brass or bronze bushing in there?

Re: steering column repair - housing support replacement

mine does the same but some guy told me it has to do with the tilt wheel getting worn out, he also said that 3 bolts need to be tightened with the use of a "special" tool. I tried reading the repair manual but i am having a hard time finding those 3 bolts because the pics in the manual are not so clear. If anybody has done this in the past and has some pics, would you be so kind to post here your experience and the pics of course?? thanks in advance!
BTW the part number you posted is for the fourth-gen, as it specifies on http://www.gmpartsdepartment.com/par...&siteid=214533.

Re: steering column repair - housing support replacement

the part number i posted is valid for the 90-92 airbag columsn as well.

I imagine you already find the pictures of the three bolts you need to tighten; if not, the job ahead of you isn't too bad. I can't recall any special tools you need though; just a general selection of tools, torx bits should do it; I don't think you even need to remove the pivot pins.
