So today i was walking around pepboys and stumbled across a cup holder that i decided i wanted to put into my center console. It took like an hour and here are some pics of how we did it.
got the cup holder for only 3.99
I then removed the center console and marked where i wanted the cup holder to be.
Then i used a 3 3/4 inch hole saw to cut an opening.
after the first hole was cut.
I then used a dremel to widen the hole untill the cup holder would just barely fit into the hole. I Pretty much forced it in to make it snug.
right after we forced it into place.
Then put a bead of glue on the underside to secure it in place.
after putting console back into the car.
first time in use.
This was a really easy and convenient project that i recomend to anyone that wants a cup holder in their car without the hassle of switching to a 4th gen console.

Looks like a sweet project dude, my only question would be how is it shifting gears with something in the cupholder?
I usually rest my right arm on the console and rest my hand on the shifter when driving, so I'd almost worry having something there would be bothersome

How often are you manually shifting your automatic? I can see when you're racing, which you would'nt have anything in your cup holder then. I wonder if there's enough room in my 'bird for this...
Good write up, it has been done many times before and is practical.

Give a man a fish and he will eat for a day, teach a man to fish, and he will sit on a boat drinking beer for a life time
This is one of my favorite ones, you are limited to the size of drink but IMHO it looks good.

Its not as bothersome as having a drink in hand and no place to put it and it really doesn't get in the way at all. And like he said i really dont shift my own gears that often but if im at the strip or racing i wont have a drink with me.
I've got a 17" laptop, and all the scrolling left & right trying to see the pics....It would be nice if they were made smaller, or the edges cropped to reduce unnecessary things in the pics edges.
You know.. i've got a 5 speed and a cup holder would come in handy for constant shifting.. but whenever i drive one of the other car's (all automatic) i just hold it.. doesn't really get in the way.. i drive with 1 hand alot, unless road conditions call for both hands.. looks great tho
man i wish i could do that. but i cant because my side mirror adjuster is there. so which is more important the side mirrors being adjusted or a place to put my freakin drink.
It was very simple and as long as you take is slow it will come out perfect. like i said i would recommend this project to anyone. And yes chipotle is the best ever it was my inspiration behind the cup holder.
Judging my Experience with my 93 5 Speed Camaro, where the factroy cup holder was in the same place.....
.........If you have a Manual, don't bother putting it there. now, I personally never drink in my cars, but my wife (Girlfriend at the time I owned that car) used to always bring a bottle of something with her, and it was always in the way when I had to shift.
Of course I also found the factory 90-92 Firebird ones to be useless as well.
Nice looking install to the Original Poster though. You did a good clean job!

Its not that i shift my automatic manually, but I usually rest my right hand on the shifter when I'm driving around, and as far as getting in the way of shifting, I'm talking going from park to drive or reverse, that kinda shifting....
I know its not that big of a deal, but its just something that I could see as being bothersome
i think that looks pretty awesome....too bad theres no clearance in my t/a cuz of the power window/power mirror switches.....too bad, that one there is really nice!

Nice job on installing the cup holder! I went to my local Pep Boys but i didn't see one there. Guess i'll go back and look again or hit one of the other local parts stores!!!!
well if you did this in a manuel wouldnt it get in the way of shifting??
it actually doesnt look like it would be in the way that much, yes, he has a beer in the holder, but a beer is fairly TALLER than a coke can for example. i have a 5 spd and i dont see it a huge problem, besides the stick is pretty freakin tall and it doesnt take much to get to 5th so its not like its gonna be in the way all the time. its better than always trying to get a drink with a screw top and holding it between your legs while shifting! and good job, looks real good!

anyone have a picture of this installed ? Im thinking of doing this one, because I think it looks alot cleaner. But then I wouldnt have anyplace to hide my ipod cause i would loss the ash tray.

Wow that looks amazing, I think Im gonna do both & have 3 cup holders. I don't smoke & I still can keep loose change in their. Now all you have to do is fix that center pad & it'll be all good. As for the i-pod I have a holder on my vents to keep it in.
I am jealous of your cup holder, but twice as jealous that you can get Yeungling. I bet can even buy beer on sundays can't you? Down here in Georgia its Natty Light Mon-Sat.
This looks pretty good, as for you guys having a manual, I had this cup holder in my '91 Camaro when I bought it back in '94 that looked pretty good and everyone thought it was factory. It took me years to find another one like it, well at least until I bought my boat and was browsing for parts for it and stumbled upon that cup holder. Anyways, it was mounted on the passenger side of the console just on the other side of the radio and it never got in the way and it folds up when not in use.
The top one is a stainless steel model and the other ones are plastic. They are available at www.westmarine.com
they also have some other ones that might suit some of you guys needs.
Been wondering if anyone would ever put a cup holder in that empty space. Been wanting to do the same thing my self but never got around to it. It looks better then I thought it would.

yep seven days a week im drinking that stuff. Just thought i would add that its been a couple of weeks now and everythings still holding strong and making my driving alot better.
wetvette92, do you happen to have a picture of that cupholder installed. I just ordered 2 black ones through ACE Marina and I'm trying to figure out where I want to mount them.
For those with manuals or the mirror switches there like me u can get these they are more expensive though. I believe hawks third gen parts sells them but in black only. And they are factory so they should bolt right on, to any car or just drill and use a tap die set to thread for whatever screw size u will use. they are held in by three t-30 torx tip screws.
here is a really old pic of when i first got the car, it doesn't have the gold pin striping any more and i have painted some of the int. componets to match the color of the car, anyways you can see both doors have cup holders, and a map pocket this is stock for just the 91 and 92 i belive.
