question about shifter knob removal 88 gta

hi.
I know its a stupid question, but i cant get the knob unscrewed off my 5 speed shifter in my 88 gta.

its stock...but the stiched leather is somehow unglued itsself from the steel knob and it spins free....

i think im gonna have to cut the leather off and attack it with 2 pairs of vicegrips...
i just want to make sure it is threaded....

pls let me know.

Yep, it's threaded, I've got the exact same one. Maybe try wrapping it with a towel and grabbing it with a rubber band wrench. That may get it without destroying the leather.

To fix the loose leather, I've seen people put epoxy into a syringe and squeeze it thru the stitching, slide the leather around to spread the epoxy and set it where it needs to be to dry. Years later, it still works and looks like new.

On a manual trans? The clip should only be on the auto shifter.
