Gull Wing Steering Wheel (Knight Rider) legal in florida?

I've been looking for the answer, and was wondering what the law for florida is? Is it just that a wheel needs to be a certain diameter but not round (like knight rider?)
thanks for your help.

Round steering wheels are a federal requirement, so no it’s not legal anywhere in US for on road use. If you don’t want to use your car on road, then pretty much anything goes.

If it were true, then Knightridersite.com would not be making turn-key KITTS and KARS for sale to the general public.

Re: Gull Wing Steering Wheel (Knight Rider) legal in florida?

There is no law against install, owning, or selling non round steering wheels. You can do pretty much anything you want to your car for off road use. I was referring to vehicles registered for on-road use which need to meet the NHTSA safety specs. I looked through the NHTSA site quickly today regarding it but didn’t find anything. Maybe it’s not true anymore but I’ll see if I can find the specific law.

Its like emission, Federal law forbids the removal or disabling of emission components on vehicles registered for on-road use in all 50 states. But many states don’t check so people get away with it and no one cares. Just look on eBay and you see a lot of registered cars that have emission removed and I have never heard of anyone getting in trouble. And again that applies to registered on-road vehicles only.

See http://www.epa.gov/otaq/regs/fuels/cff/memo-1a.txt

But I digress; I’ll see what I can find. If anyone can show otherwise, I’m game. I like learning new stuff

I got an email back telling me to contact the Office of Vehicle Safety Compliance OVSC@nhtsa.dot.gov

So I sent them a email.

We'll see what they say.

Re: Gull Wing Steering Wheel (Knight Rider) legal in florida?

I stand corrected

Here's the email I got back from the nhtsa

Quote:
There are no Federal requirements that a steering wheel be round.
However, the steering wheel and column are integral to the frontal crash
protection of the driver. Plus the steering wheel hub contains the air
bag.
An individual could legally replace the steering wheel with a
non-original equipment wheel. However, if a commercial entity replaced
the wheel it would likely be a violation of Federal law that prohibits
rendering inoperative a safety device or design.
