Are Firebird and Camaro Mechanical Speedometers Interchangeable?
Hey guys,
I am looking at swapping out my 85mph speedo for a larger 145mph speedo in my 84 TransAm. However, so far as I have been able to research, Pontiacs only came with mechanical 85mph speedos. Anything above that is electronic. I have found a 145 camaro mechanical speedometer for sale and was wondering if they are interchangeable? How do they fit if they are? Has anyone done this before? Any help would be appreciated, thanks!

Yeah, I've seen those before but thanks again anyway. I'm just not real thrilled about having my car torn apart for 4-8 weeks while I wait for them to come back to me. Then again, the winters are long here in Utah....

They will interchange. I saw a pic of a 85 trans am cluster that had a working iroc speedo in the cluster. I have also seen camaros with trans am speedos. May not be direct drop in in terms of mounting but it would be damn easy to do.

There was no full write-up at all. The thread was over 2 years ago I remeber a guy posted a pic of his 82-84 Z28 with a 82-85 Trans am speedo in the cluster but with the rest of the stock z28 gauges. If I wanted to do it I would just go ahead and do it. A cable speedo is about as easy as it gets not sure what anyone could do a writeup about other then taking clusters apart or painting the back of your new speedo orange so it lights up like the rest.
On another note there was also another thread I posted in here a long time ago , turned out a guy with a 83ish bird used a 130mph speedo from a second gen.
