Hello, I have an 86 firebird with just the lap belt seat belts in the rear. The problem I am having is getting my sons saftey seat to fit secure in my car. This is not may daily driver, just one that I have restored and built up in the engine department. None of the instructions show how to do this. If anyone has ever installed one in these type of cars, please give me some advice, for my 2 year old loves to ride in it and the sound of it. I just need to get it more secure. Pics would also be great. Thanks guys or gals.

the seat can go in the front, and plus it scares soccer moms because they think the put childern in the back applys to all cars, when i fact it applys to passenger side air bag cars
IMO i dont see what it would hurt to just put the lap belt through the holes in the bottom of the car seat, thats what we did with my exs baby seat in the middle of the bench seat of her truck all it had was a lap belt

ny state law children under so many pounds have to be in the back facing the rear... i dont know about the rest of the states.. but this will be a problem for me as well when me and my nephew go cruising to the shoes.. im having a custom white and black two tone leather baby seat with z28 in the back done by my interior guy... well see
Ive had a car seat in my old 88 sport coupe and in my 89 Iroc vert.My daughter is almost 20 months old now.In the sport coupe it was not real stable cause the belt is a retractable type.I would just stretch it out as far as I needed it to click into the receiver and then try to get the slack out.The car seat still slid around a little bit.In the vert its much more secure since the rear lap belts are not the retractable type. You just pull the excess part thru the latch to take up the slack and it stays tight
For either style seat belt you want to pull the seat belt all the way out and hold it there and after you run it thru the car seat and buckle it apply pressure to the seat and release the seat belt and it should lockin and stay at the point it returns to and the car seat should be pretty tight , but remember on the shoulder belt you have to take out the slack first .

The problem I'm having is that there is no high/center attachment piont on our cars because its a hatch. Because of this you can pull the back of the carseat forward more than I'd like. Thought it might be carseat design, all 3 I have are different and all 3 do the same thing in the car.
The high mount point is something you'll hafta custom fan a mount, or do without. Maybe you can weld in a roll bar mount plate & attach a mount to it, to hook to?
AFAIK, the 3rd point is only a "extra feature", not required. Safer? Yes.
I ran the top belt over the seat back and clipped it into the U-shaped clip on the "floor" of the hatch area just behind the seat. The lap belt went through the body of the car seat like usual. With these connections, it's very stable in my 85. I bought my Z28 specifically to put a car seat in the back for my (now) 2 1/2 year old. When I tell him we're taking the Camaro, he calls it "Daddy back cah" (we're still learning our l's and r's). He thinks that the glass T-tops are really cool.

You mean the clip for holding t-tops down, after taking them off? Is he under 15lbs?
If not & you have a wreck & the seat shifts forward, that flimsy u-clip will rip right loose.
you know i just thought of this, when i was a baby i rode in my moms arms, (in a 74 Vette too sometimes) when i got a little bigger had an old booter seat (not the safety seats now) we went in trips in the car i layed in the back seat, we went it trips in the motorhome i moved about freely.......DHR would have a you know what fit if that happened today
I put a few folded towels under the kid seat, helps keep the kid seat from sinking in at an angle on the deeply concave rear bucket seat. I also agree with what was said above, about pushing down pretty hard on the kid seat and tightening the OEM seat belt on it to secure the kid seat.
Securing the top strap to an OEM hook loop back on the rear shelf is a good idea, IMHO even if your kid is more than 15 lb. Those loop brackets are actually quite strong, remember they are designed to hold the hefty t-tops in place...

My thinking exactly. Besides, the seat belt can hold a full-size adult on its own. If the seat belt holds the car seat, and my son is in a five point harness in the car seat, there is more than enough to secure him in a crash.
you can use the spare tire mount in the well in the far rear. that was what it was originally for, a full size spare tire, but then they went to a space saver, but some places demand a full size spare so the kept the mounting point.
use a mountain climbing clip, it will hold in any emergency. you can also use mountain climbing ropes that you can tightened.
and there is no damage to the car.
I'm having the same issue with my 6yr old son in the back of my 92 stang. If you go to babies r us get a seat belt ratchet, that should strap it down enough for you.I have to do this myself.
Just got the belt ratchet from Babys R Us works like a dream. It holds it in realy well. I think you can buy them at Toys R Us as well. This car is not my daily driver, but my 2 year old son loves the sound of the cam and wants me to in his own words "smoke the tires off daddy" When I start it up, he comes running out side and making motor noises. I guess you got to start em young.
