The difference is the length of the shaft that sticks out on the engine side of the firewall. The 4th gen shaft is longer. However, the 3rd gen has an adjustable length shaft that connects the steering column to the steering box... so you might be able to swap it. What's the reason to change though? they are virtually identical in appearance inside the car.

Re: will a 4th gen column fit a third gen

I have an 86 TA, with a tilt column, linkage for key to ignition switch broke at the swivel, I dont feel like rebuilding the column. So I aswell am interested in doing this swap, however I am also looking for a 98-02 firebird for a engine and tranny swap along with dash and console. So if I could also just swap the column too that would be easier in a way

I'm interested in this as well. Simply because I've found the pivot pins in my column have rounded out the holes they reside in, making my wobbly tilt non repairable without ruining the tilt function.

I can't bring myself to buy another old column, scared of repeating the same problem in a short time. Swapping to a column ten years newer that looks nearly identical would be an ideal solution for me.
