signal flasher..where? 1984 Firebird

Can anyone tell me where the flasher unit is for the directional signals on my 1984 Firebird? Mine has stopped flashing (both sides), although all the bulbs are good. They come on steady and don't blink. I thought the flasher might be in the fuse box, but it's not. The hazards work fine, and the clicking seems to be coming from the center of the dash. Where is the flasher and how do I get to it? My repair manuals all say the flashers are in the "convenience center" but don't show or tell where that is!
Thanks!

If it is like my 89 (and most I know), it is HIDDEN on a CLIP under the center bit of the dash near the radio housing on the driver's side.

Hope this helps!

Thank you! I found it right where you said. It was missing the turn signal flasher, so I finally bought an OEM from Pontiac. It didn't solve my problem...the signals light, but won't blink.
Any ideas?

Hmmmm Is your battery fully charged? All the contacts nice and clean? I had the same issue with a motorbike when the battery was low. Also, are you 100% SURE that the all 4 bulbs are good? If it is a local car parts flasher deal, make sure it is GOOD (I have bought some only to get home and find they were ALSO made of FAIL).

Lastly, are you sure you got the right flasher? (I ask because I made this boo boo on a 73 Monte Carlo *Facepalm*).

Glad you found the blasted thing in any case. Drove me NUTZ just like trying to find the fuse for the fuel pump. I know..I KNOW...that little box UNDER THE HOOD on the pass side. Well NOW I KNOW. *Head Desk head desk*

So when you put the turn signal on, the lights come on steady instead of blinking is that what you mean?

Yes, the battery is good (car cranks and starts, no problem), contacts are good (or the lights wouldn't light at all), and I got the flasher from Pontiac, after looking in my Pontiac Parts and Illustration manual, and then rechecking the part number online.
I was wondering if it's possible that the part is faulty, and how can I check it?

Yes, that is exactly right, either side.

So the unit was missing entirely before you bought the new one?
While I am not one to suggest tossing money about, I would hit up the local Advance, Auto-Zone et al. and pick up another flasher unit. If that clears it up, return the first one.

Beyond that, I confess you have me stumped.

Re: signal flasher..where? 1984 Firebird

At first I bought a flasher from AutoZone and they gave me the wrong one. Then I went to Pepboys and again the wrong one. Finally, I got one from Pontiac and compared it. The metal prongs on the Pontiac flasher get wider at the top, and it fits in correctly, unlike the other two that had straight spades.
Here's a question...if there was no flasher to begin with, why were the bulbs lighting at all? Don't they need the flasher to complete the circuit? I'm really confused now...
