can you really fix your old carpet with a bit of ingenuity and 20 bucks??!! yes yes you can. and heres how I did it. now alot of people have doubted that you can fix a headliner for 20 bucks but i wanted to prove that if you can do the headliner you can also do your carpet... on a budget. heres how lets walk through the carpet first.
1. go to walmart and get yourself and purcahse 2 rolls of ozite brand carpeting... the come in rolls of 36" by 72" and they are perfecct for the entire driver or passenger side flooring.... but you need 2 rolls cause it wont cover both sides.
2. go to autozone napa or any other parts store and pick yourself up a can of heavy duty carpet and headliner adhesive... dont be cheap and get the 6.00 not so heavy duty crap... you will regret the results of your job.
3.remove your carpet.. GO CRAZY! you wont be needing any of itr so take it out by whatever means nessasary... dont forget tho that the console holds down the carpeting in the center so make sure you do a good job or just take the console out.
4. begin by making a rough positioning of the carpen on your floor.. begin to trim the excess and make cuts to allow for the seatbelt and the contour of the floor in the front by the pedals. this is the hardest step and you must be careful that your razor stays sharp as your making your cuts... replace your blade often. also make sure to make small cuts to allow for the seat bolts to pop through the carpet!
5 pick a corner and begin to spray the adhesion spray. make sure you smooth out any ripples with your hand as you move along. make sure you spray the adhesion spray on both the carpet and the metal! that way you have a bond that wont release as your move your feet on the carpet when driving.
6. enjoy the new lightweight (by far) carpet in your ride! you may want to consider adding bottom padding underneath your carpet but i diddnt... as your driving its not very noisy tho... even on dirt roads... the padding does very little to deaden the noise... and it weighs more so i wouldnt put it in... but thats up to you! maybe tomorrow i will document how to do the headliner... until then enjoy and let me know if you would like help on either project!
heres the materials the carpet instalation requires... all for around 20 bucks plus heres another pic of the carpet completed and installed on the driver side. passenger side pics coming soon!
heres the passenger side completed... I would like to get some opinions. anybody? is this something you would do to your car? keep in mind im attending college and dont have the cash to throwdown on a carpet kit that costs 150 bucks. and this car is just my daily driver that my girlfriend liked to whine about the lack of carpeting in. hahah i think its a cheap reasonable fix allowing me to put my money where it really belongs... in the motor and making it run reliably. I thought it would be a nice guide to anyone looking to replace their carpet but finds themselves short on dough.
nice! i might have to try that! its cheap enough and looks great....good alternative to buying the expensive molded carpet. idk about using the spray adhesive all over...i have sub and stereo wiring running under the current carpet. i'd prob just spray it in the foot wells and hatch. good job!!!
LG4 305ci 4bbl motor, 2.5" Cherry Bomb Extreme muffler- side exit exhaust, Cragar 15x7 Black D Window wheels (4" backspacing), Cooper Cobra Radial GT tires (P235/60R15), 36mm hollow front sway bar with wonder bar, 24mm rear sway bar, Energy Suspension endlinks and Guldstrand bushings, Edelbrock Elite 4222 air cleaner with K&N filter, FF Dynamics 16" Cyclone electric fan, Flex-a-lite Variable Speed Fan Controller, custom fixed headlight conversion with 5000K HIDs and Silverstar Ultra H7 bulbs, Pilot PL-362W driving lights with Hella 100W H3 bulbs, Deka Intimidator 9A78DT AGM battery
Looks very nice! Especially for the minimal investment. I actually used that same exact carpet from walmart In my Fiero that I had last year and it held up real well even through the winter.
the spray adhesive held together pretty well. i did a test spot with this carpet on the metal and it was a sucker to pull up.. it even left the fibers behind on the metal so it had a really good bond. its kinda like the same material that they use on the sides of subwoofer boxes if anyone wants to know the quality of the walmart carpet.. just a tad thicker though.. I diddnt want ppl to think that this is a substitute to molded carpeting (which is by far supreior) but this stuff is close... very close. if done correctly.. next project im posting pics of is how i did the headliner for about the smae price... i have to find my old memory card with the pics tho.. stay tuned!

i also have the sub wires.. but carpeted right over em!
headliner next? i lost those pics on how I did it... so maybe ima take my headliner down and do it again... I was thinking about switching the color to red anyhow... pm me or something if you wanna see how I did it... if i get enough messages I guess I will go and redo it and do a write up with pics again but only if ppl want to c how I did it... again for about 20 bucks in material.
not bad. I remember doing this over my tan carpet (to black) which held up nice, but eventually my corners started creeping in so I went to the junkyard and got a black carpet from a black interior fbody. It looks good. I'm sure the Halo3 helped!

How well did you get it to contour to the passenger side front foot well, in front of the front seat? That seems to be the biggest problem in our cars.

I think when i replace my carpet, I will fasten down a plate or something to make the floor flat..
Is gluing it down really the best way to do it? I mean what if you need to chagne the carpet again in another 20 years?
Im counting on 2 things.. 1 the floor will rot out again or 2 the carpet is thin enough to carpet over again with the expensive molded stuff. let me get back to you in 20 years. hahahah ill let you know what i did.
when you decide to pull out that capet when it's worn out, use a heat gun to soften the glue to pull up the carpet. I'm switching my interior from red to grey... the headliner was only about 5 years old... heatgun and patiance got the headliner foam off of the backer board.
hey I wanna switch from grey to red! would you wanna get rid of the speaker covers and the armrests and door panels? and as far as the back plastics.. I can trade you.. my plastic is mint. interested?
if yours are mint, I'd feel like i was stealing them. some of my back panels show a lot of sun fade/ sun damage. and where are you located ? as you can see. I'm in Corpus Christi Texas. shipping might be expensive. I'll try to get some pics of my pieces. we can go from there... might take a couple of days for me to do this.
