replacing gas lifters on trunk... help! - Third Generation F-Body Message Boards

Hey guys, the gas lifters on the trunk of my 91 T/A 'vert were getting worn out and barely held the thing up so I bought a fresh pair at autozone and now when I go to put the new ones in... they're 1/2 inch too long but they're the exact same length as the old ones, so they stretched out a little from not having any load on em. But how am I supposed to get the new ones to fit? I can't get them to compress and fit!

when i put my new ones on i just bolted them to the car first and then raised the hatch until they line up, and put the screw in. they were easy.. at first i thought i may have to compress them..but lifting the hatch higher did the trick.

I tried that but I don't have a hatch. The convertibles had different trunk set ups. I'll try pushing it up farther but I'm afraid to break something.
