I have always wanted a 3rd gen Z28. Finally got an '84 recently. Probably a retard question, but I have no idea. In the cargo area there is a half-moon shaped hole in the carpet. Inside the hole is some sort of bracket. Seems like a pole would fit in it and stick straight up. What is this for???
my 84z got the exact same thing, always thought it was for strapping down t-tops or cargo cover or something. mines a hardtop and dont have the cargo cover so i never used em
I am at work now, but will post a pic in a couple hours. It is a hard top. I can't see it being used for a cargo cover as it is located several inches down from the top of the 'hump'.
Interesting question. I've always "assumed" that all thirdgens had the cut-out/bracket and that the bracket was somehow used by the factory to move cars about on the production line. The history board might be better suited to answer the question. I'm curious.

Waiting on the pic to be sure, but my 92 has something similar. Its a T-top car though. If its what I am thinking of, it has nothing to do with the T-tops or the bag. It may be for the flip-down cargo cover that was installed in some earlier thirdgens though.

Definitely not for the hard well cover, which has hinge provisions on either side of the single bracket mentioned above. BTW, my hardtop has it. I'll be surprised if there are cars without it--but I've been surprised before.

Reason: Teacher's Scotch
That's exactly what it is (ring a bell). My owner's manual, in the stowage instructions (sec. 3.5), shows it for a full-sized flat.

the only DUMB/STUPID question is the one that is not asked . JamesC , we are never too old to learn . ( i know i'm not that old ) anyway we can always pass on lots of info. to younger gearheads . , god bless them all . cheers !!!
I have the exact same thing in my 89 GTA. I just ignore it since i dont know what it is. Then again i am missing the two top hooks for my t-top bag so maybe my car is just weird

Oh well, it was a thought. I've only ever seen the hard cover once on a JY car and didn't take the time to look at how its mounted.
The flat tire thing makes sense when you think about how low the trunk lids on these cars are. I always wondered why the trunks were shaped the way they are with the well in the back but just figured it was an attempt to give the owner something resembling a trunk space.
