Door speakers

Has anyone tried to mount speakers in the doors like on the 4th generation? I did a search and didn't find anything but I have a hard time believing that with all the creative genius in this forum no body has tried this. I haven't taken my door apart yet so I don't know how its designed but I saw somewhere that the power windows motor is where the speaker would be on the 4th generation but what about a little farther back?

Re: Door speakers

yes, its quite common. I have speakers there. You probably didn't search the right thing because you simply cannot mount the speakers in the door. You have to make a door pod to put the speakers in.

Re: Door speakers

got any pics? I'm not sure if its possible with electric windows since I believe the window motor sits in that general area...

Re: Door speakers

I got a set from a newer caddy at the JY - they stick out from the door a tad because of the window motor issue, but the caddy has really nice black carpeted 'pods' factory made on the door that I also got hold of - maybe some day I'll have time to try it out and see if it fits.

Re: Door speakers

I was wondering if you cut a circle right behind where the power windows motor is mounted if it would fit there, but I'm not sure if it will get in the way of the linkages or the window coming down.

Re: Door speakers

you definitely need spacer in order to not hit the window motor. Also, our door panels are not a very rigid material. To do it right, you really need to build up a pod and bolt it directly to the door sheet metal. Not overly difficult, but not as easy as just throwing in and going.

You can make door buildouts (see below) or use spacers and buy "shallow mount" speakers. 5.25 or 6.5 speakers will work.

Two 6.5" with power windows

Re: Door speakers

It's not too hard but as others have said, you will need to make spacers, here's a pic of mine
