Neon Logo

I had an idea for making a green glowing Chevy Logo - my Camaro just got painted this summer with HOK Candy Teal Green. I thought I'd use EL Wire and a piece of quarter inch modelers wood. I cut out the logo on the scroll saw, drilled holes so I could thread the EL Wire in and out around the inside edges in the shape of the logo, and mount it on little nylon spacers so that it stands up off a flat surface about 1/2 inch. The end result would be a raised Chevy logo, with green neon lighting on it in the same logo shape, and since to thread the EL wire in and out makes the glowing logo shape on the underside as well, the glow will escape the edges since it's raised, and make a green glow all around the outer edges of the wooden logo shape.

Well, after a few hours and $15 of materials, the end result. It doesn't really glow out arond the edges from underneath as I was hoping - the EL Wire is just not bright enough, and the black carpet absorbs all the light - plus I think the eye is so focused on the neon on top of the logo, that it can't discern the little bit of light that comes out from under. The wood was spray painted with Krylon Fusion Hammered Texture paint.

I mounted it between my subs, and wired it to the amp under the panel - the negative EL lead runs to the negative on the amp, the positive lead runs to the signal wire on the amp (from the head unit) - this way the EL is lit when the stereo is on, not just when the lights are on.

It got dark on me, so the 1st 2 pics are with flash, and the last is no flash on the "fireworks" mode on my camera.

Re: Neon Logo

The EL wire I picked up off the discount table at my local Advance Auto - seems like green is not a selling color, and all the green neon and LED goodies are getting marked down considerably - which works fine for me sincce I want green (recent HOK candy teal paint).

EL Wire = Electroluminescent Wire - it's kinda like a fiber optic of sorts I guess. Doesnt make alot of bright light, but glows like neon and can have a cool effect. Just search EL wire in any search engine - tons of places online - and most auto parts stores have it in the ***** section with the other LED stuff.

Re: Neon Logo

Thanks for the clarification. I was thinking of making glowing firebird emblems to cover the manual window holes in my door panels.

Re: Neon Logo

The 'Bird would be a trick to say the least. An idea might be making a cutout of the 'Bird, then mounting LED behind the cutout, so that the light would glow out of the 'Bird cutout. You could drill holes just large enough to work a scroll saw blade in, then cut as needed. It would be cool with the 'Bird.

Re: Neon Logo

Neat idea you got there. I will have to see if I can find some of that stuff. I am thinking it would look good over the bowtie emblem on the front grill. Only in red maybe.
