gauge cluster help

ok 1984 camaro sc, came with a z28 145 mph cluster in it. now im pretty sure the speedo is off, and the rpm. the oil pressure kinda works, it stays in the red and just kinda bounces. the gas gauge works. the volt goes dangerously low, but i think i now why on that. temp actually works, accurately.
when the headligths come on the rpms/volt/oil just all stop working, but if the headlights are on and the dash light are turned off they work again. quick question didnt it come with a 85 mph cluster? and also why arent my guages working? i didnt install the cluster and i was trying to find the tech artile on how to swap em, but failed to find it. thanks for all help guys/girls.

Your 84 originally was equipped with the "dual pointer" speedo head. If your SC originally came with idiot lights and the previous owner didn't install sending units, the cluster wouldn't read correctly. There may also be some compatibility issues (electrical) between the 84 and later clusters.

Re: gauge cluster help

omg yes thats the link!!! thanks a ton for it. and my temp works, i see it raising. and i think i found the oil sending unit, looks factory. and question i have a manual car, factory, so would the cluster have a shift light on it? like my 88 did (even tho that was a auto) and the speedo beening off would be bc i have 16s on it instead of the 15s, or 14s? so it may be a eletrically thing for the guages not working when the headlight are on? but what about when they are on but the dash lights are turned off? and the temp gauge always works. that reminds me i need to fix the trip meter, got the link for that. thanks jamesc for the help.

My car is an 85 T-5; it has no shift light. Yes, the wheels/tires could cause the speedo to read incorrectly. Since the cluster was replaced, it may not have been seated properly, which might be your current problem.
