Quick question for you guys, is it a direct swap when swapping a ball type shift knob fom the 82 or 84 to a 91-92 shift knob? I love the look of a ball type knob but im not sure if it will fit properly if you guys have done any of these swaps could you fill me in. If it worked out for you and if it fit correct?
91-92 shift knobs are NOT a direct replacement for the 82-87 style. The earlier style knobs use a C-clip under the button, the later styles use a U-clip that pushes in through the front of the knob.
Because of that, the groove on the shifter is in different locations. If you want to switch to a 91-92 style knob you will need a different shifter. We have them available on our site if you need one. Here's a link if you're interested.

Yes, I have a couple, they're both slightly different so I'd have to check. The problem is that adding up what I paid along with shipping it ends up being better if you can find one locally. I'm still curious about what you have and if it can work. I had the square style knob in my '86 and switched it to the round style and then again to a T-handle one with a little modification to the handle. That's kind of why I have them around so I have something to reference off of without tearing the cars apart, lol

I have the 700r4 tranny. And I want the I believe the 82-85 or so ball type automatic shifter the one with the button so your allowed to move threw the gears. The one I have right now is the leather type. And due to the way that Rick's car looked with a ball type knob I just liked it a lot.
Ok, I dug around a little. They made the ball with leather and without for the automatics. They also differ in shape as well as the distance top and bottom from where the C-clip attaches. In other words the recess for the button differs in depth as do the length of the buttons. Some have metal tabs on the inside and other don't. I've been grabbing stuff over many years and I never kept track of what came from what years. I have a couple of shifters and I'm not even sure if they're from Firebirds or Camaro's but the slot for the C-clip is about 1/8" from the top of the shaft on both. (Firebirds use the U shaped clip BTW.)

My camaro has the U clip too. Umm not sure which one will fit though, cause I dont really want to go through the trouble on swaping out the hole shifter assymbley.
IIRC, it's not all that difficult to remove the assembly. But if you pull the handle off of yours, you should be able to compare it to what I posted. If it's similar, then there's a good chance it will fit. Just make sure you include the cut out as well. Pull the U clip out and the handle off and that's it. My '86 that I swapped around had the U clip and the square handled shifter knob.
