My 4th gen dash swap

ok im working on my 4th gen dash swap and everything is in the car but i am having wiring issues with the headlight switch.

the problem is the the interior lights do not turn on, everything else works fine.

got them to work, it was a grounding issue

i'm doing this swap soon. i'm wondering if you could give me a schematic on the light switch and dimmer. this is the only function that i need to make work as i'm using autometer gauges, and NO HVAC system.

its pretty strait forward.

HEADLIGHT SWITCH
Orange to orange
red to red
yellow to yellow
brown to brown
the brown also needs to go to your dimmer switch input and the output from that goes to the grey wires for your dash lights and also the grey lead for the headlight switch

DIMMER SWITCH
Outer Wires
Black - ground
White - Dome light
Inner Wires
use one for input and the other for output

Wire Funtions

white is for the dome lights
grey is dash lights
yellow to headlights
brown is your parking lights
the orange and red are hot at all times
all black are ground

CHECK ALL OF YOUR GROUNDS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

if something isn't clear tell me.

what dash are you using?

the whole swap wasn't that hard at all. all i really had to do to mount is was make 2 brackets for the bottom bar to bolt up to and trim the ducting a bit.
took the air bag out too

Re: My 4th gen dash swap

when you were putting the dash in, did you have to trim anything off the car, or off the dash for it to fit flush? or just kinda hold it in place while you sinched down the fasteners? mines not really sitting very flush against the firewall.

I did have to trim the top or the brackets on both sides off the car and bend them in a little bit and make a bar for the bottom. after that the top on the firewall was completely flush (except on the driver side. had to make a piece to come off the firewall to hold it) Just have a buddy hold it up and put the pass side bolt in then you will have to drill 2 small holes in the firewall for the middle bolts to go into.

From what i have read on here is the 98-02 clusters do not work. You need a cluster from a 93-97. you dont need to change any sensors and your speedo should be right if using the t56. (mine is off ALOT with my t5)
I used these pinouts

Re: My 4th gen dash swap

I really don't see how what engine you have will make much difference at all. The 305 4bbl is what my car had in it from the factory but that was replaced with a 350 a long time ago. Now im moving to an LS1 so let the re-wiring begin

Can you possibly elaborate on this a little bit for me?

Are all of the wires needed to hook up the fourth gen headlight switch found in the connector that plugs into the third gen headlight switch? What exactly does the brown wire for the headlights hook into, besides the other brown wire?

(I know this thread is a little old, but worth a try. )

i believe there are 2 wires that don't get connected, but i'm not 100% sure (i'm not at my car right now). and if they were it would be from the 4th gen connector. as for the brown wire, no idea what it exactly hooks up to, but hey when it works then who cares in the end. just make sure you got all the right schimatics for your car and the 4th gen, colors of wires tend change sometimes. hope that helped some. if by anychance you come across an extra 4th gen dash pad let me know. i'm out here in hawaii, and the one junkyard i've found has no f-bodies in it worth a ****.

Thanks for the reply man.

I actually buttoned up the wiring last night and had to make my own tweaks. Your right about some of the wires not being the correct colors, but I made my own chart to reference as I modded my harness and it worked out pretty nicely. I dont remember exactly what I did with the headlight switch, all I know is that I got it working, lol. Except now my high-beams arent working, but I dont really care, as I never use them anyway.

Good luck in the Dashpad hunt.

Re: My 4th gen dash swap

So I'm figuring i will do this swap this winter while my car is off the road. I have a 92 camaro. I found that most all dashes will work but not always with the cluster gauges. There are 93-96 camaro dashes. 97-02 camaro dashes. And 93-02 firebird dashes. If i leave my gauges what dash would be best to use or are they all the same? And if i decide to swap my guages what guages bolt in with what dashes and will still work in my camaro? Basically I'm wondering what will be the easiest way to go .
